How To Make Disadvantages Advantages: The Power of Embracing Constraints

Stuart Crainer and Des Dearlove, the pulse behind Thinkers50 and esteemed journalists at the London Times, were on an intriguing quest. They were grappling with a thought-provoking question: "What's the impact of a top thinker and who makes the call?"

This seemingly simple question dramatically shifted their careers.

Stuart and Des decided to deploy their journalistic acumen to hold management thinkers accountable – much like their counterparts would do with politicians.

Steering away from the predictability of traditional journalism, they conceived the idea of Thinkers50. The connection stimulated new and dynamic discussions. This platform has become a bridge between management thinkers and a much broader audience.

When I interviewed Stuart Crainer and Des Dearlove on the Disrupt Yourself podcast, I was struck by their willingness to jump to a new S Curve. Their drive to grow and learn didn't limit itself to personal disruption; instead, it has transformed our comprehension and engagement with thought leaders from the management world.

Their journey remarkably aligns with one of the Seven Accelerants of Growth—Embrace Constraints. Constraints often elicit negative connotations, but can in fact be the fuel for inventive solutions.

To embrace constraints is to discover possibilities within the limitations, making what appears to be a disadvantage advantageous.

Stuart and Des leveraged the constraints of traditional journalism to innovate and construct a very different platform. Detaching from their familiar professional realm helped them craft a new discourse in management thought and fueled their own growth.

Boundary recognition and constraint circumnavigation can lay the foundation for personal and professional development.

Just as Stuart and Des have pushed bounds to deliver change, consider your potential leaps in your professional journey. How can you grow and innovate amidst constraints?

Can you embrace constraints in your profession to identify opportunities for improvement and innovation?

How can embracing constraints induce both personal and professional breakthroughs?

I'm a big proponent of the value of a framework (aka boundaries) to provide the support for the creativity in our work, like vines growing on a trellis.

Awesome suggestions. This validates my new found reason for management and collaboration. The recent COVID and Wars makes it more plausible for doing things difference. Am the new Disruption Officer. Thanks for sharing.
