How to Make Candles with Essential Oils

Making candles with essential oils at home is a fun and rewarding activity. Many people became experts during the lockdown. (Sigh! Let’s not bring up that word again.) Not only do you get to enjoy the creative process, but you also end up with beautifully scented candles that can make any space feel cozy and inviting. Here’s a simple guide to help you get started.

You Will Need Some or All of These Items

  1. Wax: Soy wax is a popular choice because it’s natural and burns cleanly.
  2. Essential Oils: Choose your favorite essential oils. Floral, earthy and camphorous oils are popular options.
  3. Wicks: Cotton wicks work well for most candles.
  4. Mason jars and Double Boiler
  5. Stirring Stick: A wooden or metal stick to stir the wax.
  6. Wick Holders: To keep the wick centered in the container. Or a tape would suffice.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Start by placing a wick in the center of each container. You can use wick holders or simply tape the wick to an external support to keep it centered.
  2. Use a double boiler to melt the wax. Fill the bottom pot with water and place the wax in the top pot. Heat the water on medium until the wax melts.
  3. Time to add the EOs. Once the wax is melted, remove it from heat. Let it cool slightly, but don’t let it solidify. Add 10-15 drops of essential oil per ounce of wax, depending on how strong you want the scent. Stir well to evenly distribute the oils.
  4. Pour the scented wax gently into your prepared containers. Leave a bit of space at the top. Make sure the wick stays centered as you pour.
  5. Allow the candles to cool and harden completely. This can take a few hours. For best results, let them sit overnight.
  6. Once the candles are fully set, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch or 0.6 cm above the wax surface. This helps ensure a clean, even burn.

Tips for Success

  • Experiment with Scents: Mix different essential oils to create unique blends.
  • Safety First: Always melt wax in a double boiler and never leave it unattended. Keep the area well-ventilated.
  • Test Batches: Start with small batches if you’re experimenting with new scents or wax types.

Follow these simple steps, and create your own scented candles at home. Enjoy the process, breathe in the fragrance, and maybe, start a thriving business.
