Damn. On my late lunch break, I saw a thing on TV about a guy from Germany who made a bone marrow donation that saved the lives of two young American girls. I think they were twins.
He ended up actually coming to the US and met them. It was truly an emotional thing to see. So I said to myself, "Hell, I'm a stud and in good shape....I could do that." So I called the National Marrow Donor Program to find out what I needed to do to register.
Bummer. The maximum age to do that is 60, and despite the fact that I think I'm still 29, I am not eligible to do it. But the woman I spoke with asked me to pass the word to everyone I know who is 60 or under, so here I am. If you are thinking about doing it, do it before you hit 60.
BTW there are two ways you can donate. One requires a procedure done in a hospital, and the other is much simpler and can be done in a clinic.
The true Bone Marrow donation requires you have it done in a hospital. But you can also have a Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Donation that a clinic can do. Both donations can save lives.
So if you have ever thought about doing either, don't wait till you are 60. Do it now. You can get info from the National Marrow Donor Program's website at: www.bethematch.org.
