Getting Into Government Contracting

It all started with CEO Kevin Williams, an Army vet who served for 24 years. After retiring, Kevin laid the foundation for Donnell & Company and brought Anna on board just before she retired from the Air Force. Government contracting was new territory, but they jumped in, ready to hit the ground running.?

Pivoting from Products to Services?

Initially, Donnell & Company focused on selling products - everything from Starfall plates and knives to parts for planes and ships. Kevin’s knack for building relationships opened doors, leading to several successful contracts.?

But to grow, they knew diversification was necessary. Early in 2022, they decided to pursue a services contract, specifically in the VA system. Despite having no background in janitorial work, they saw it as an opportunity to break into a new market.

Transitioning from products to services wasn’t easy. Military experience taught Anna the importance of adaptability, a skill she leaned on heavily. When the opportunity to bid on a janitorial contract came up, Anna was prepared.?

During the site visit, she made sure to stand out - arriving with detailed plans, engaging with contracting officers, and confidently answering questions. Her preparation paid off, and Donnell & Company secured the five-year contract, which involves floor work for a 24,000-square-foot facility.

Preparation and Persistence

Success didn’t come without challenges.There were moments of doubt and fear, but Anna pushed through, driven by a commitment to excellence. The support and tough love from mentors and the GovCon Winners community played a big part in helping refine strategies and stay focused on goals.
