How it made me feel. Hand Injury.

The first refrigerator I ever bought was in 2004 for our family home in East Central Alberta.  It was a nice fridge.  It had the ice making function and cold water dispenser integrated into the door of the unit.   After many years of service it was deployed to the basement of the house as a second unit, and over Christmas this year, it had reached the end of its useful life.   I had my brother in-law help move it from the basement out the front door of the house onto to the (frozen) lawn.

The next day, working solo, I backed my truck up to the now abandoned unit on the front lawn and proceeded to tilt, lift and angle it into my half ton truck.

I knew it the moment it happened.   My body broke out into a immediate uncontrollable sweat and I felt the need to vomit.  I cut my pinky finger, on the bottom of the fridge while lifting, in a pretty seriously unpleasant manner.   I made the way to drivers seat, sat in the truck, stunned, for several minutes until I could phone my wife to come home from work to help me with the cut and my three year old son who was thankfully still strapped into his car seat in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle.

The irony is not lost on the fact the I have represented and promoted the use of correct protective gloves for well over a decade.  I speak at every opportunity for the use of and selection of cut resistant products.   The sad reality is, I quickly looked for gloves which are virtually always on the console or under the seat of the truck and for whatever reason they were not there.  I chose to do the work without protective gloves on.  Fail.

It made me feel terrible, and sickened, not to mention a little embarrassed.  I hope to prevent any further possibilities of this happening again but practicing what I so wholly agree with and support in the use of correct hand protection.   The reality is that any glove, be leather, synthetic or otherwise would have prevented or seriously decreased the level of pain and injury.

To all of my LinkedIn Colleagues.  I encourage you to gear up properly with PPE for whatever home and commercial functions you attend to or complete in this new year.

If you would like a pair of cut resistant gloves for yourself, just let me know.

Oh My... I am so sorry to hear about this. I'm going to call you and hoping it's healing! Did you want me to send you some samples of the PIP ATG Maxicut level 3? Best glove ever! ??

Sorry to hear about the hand, John. It's amazing how often we don't heed the advice we so freely dispense to others! Hope it heals quickly with no lasting damage and that everything else in your world is going well.

Thank you Rick.

John great words to live by. Myself and my 11 year old son always throw on our ATG gloves for anything we need to do that involves using our hands. If you have them always use them a hand injury can happen anywhere or anytime!
