How is Machinery & Equipment Shipped?

Machinery and equipment are generally shipped via break bulk or containerised freight - your preferred logistical requirements, and the dimensions, weight and destination for your cargo will determine the sea freight option/s our staff can offer as part of your obligation-free custom quotation.

?

BREAK BULK SHIPPING

When your cargo is oversized, overweight, or irregularly shaped (known as out of gauge, or OOG) – and therefore cannot be shipped in a container – break bulk shipping could be the solution.? OOG cargo is loaded onto vessels, transported, and unloaded piece-by-piece.? Small to very heavy machinery and equipment, construction materials, vehicles and other goods that require individual handling can be shipped via break bulk, which includes roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) and lift-on, lift-off (LoLo).? If you prefer to ship your cargo intact (instead of partially disassembled), breakbulk could be an ideal option.

?

?? Roll-On, Roll-Off (RoRo) ??

Large, out of gauge (OOG) cargo that is self-propelling or mobile – i.e. cranes, heavy vehicles or equipment on wheels - is our most commonly shipped cargo via RoRo shipping. Most of this cargo is driven onto the vessel directly, or towed on board, including trailers and cargo that is chained or strapped onto trailers for transportation. This loading and unloading process can be very quick! Think of a RoRo vessel as a giant parking garage: some vessels have an adjustable roof (deck) to accommodate very large machinery like dump trucks, down to the height required for cars. RoRo may be more cost effective than sending your cargo disassembled and packed in containers, as there is also the extra time and cost required to pack your cargo sections, then unpack and re-assemble them at the destination.

?

?? Lift-On, Lift-Off (LoLo) ??

Vessels utilise onboard cranes (or dockside cranes) to vertically lift-on (load) and lift-off (unload) large, out of gauge (OOG) cargo when you choose LoLo shipping. Rolling cargo, i.e. trucks, cars and some machinery (pending machinery weight and the lifting capacity of the crane) can be lifted on and off the ship. If the speed of your cargo reaching the destination is not a priority, LoLo vessels often have a higher load capacity - which may make this vessel beneficial for clients with a high volume of cargo.

CONTAINERISED SHIPPING

Flat racks, open top containers and shipping containers are the containerised shipping options for your cargo. With an increase in the frequency of shipping services, and a generally decreased transit time to Australia, containerised shipping may result in a lower cost for shipping your cargo to the destination.? Weight restrictions may limit the type or location of cargo transported on (or in) containers – but our staff can provide advice on which shipping method would be suitable for your cargo.

?

?? Flat Rack Container???

When your cargo is too high (or too wide) to fit into a standard shipping container, or could be damaged if slid into a container, flat racks may be an option. Shipping container flat racks are specialised equipment used to transport cargo that cannot fit inside a standard shipping container due to being too heavy, over width or over height i.e. large machinery, trucks, timber packs, structural steel sections, helicopters, large reels, etc. ?Flat racks are 20-foot or 40-foot in length, 8-foot wide, with no side walls and open ends (like a flat platform), fixed ends or foldable ends (known as collapsible flat racks). Forklifts or cranes load cargo onto the flat rack from the top or side/s. Chains or straps are used to tie down the cargo securely to reinforced anchorage points on the flat rack side rails, floors and corner posts. Some flat racks also have forklift pockets. ?IMPORTANT: cargo travelling on out of gauge (OOG) on flat racks will also require a suryevors report to be completed - NMT handle this documentation for you, to ensure your cargo is compliant before loading.

?

?? Open Top Containers ??

When your machinery and large industrial parts are oversized, heavy and/or irregularly shaped so they cannot fit into a standard container, an open top container allows your cargo to be lowered inside, then secured for shipping, without a height restriction. This option can accommodate mining and construction machinery or equipment, as well as other types of cargo.

?

?? Shipping Containers???

Many medium-sized mining, construction and earthmoving machinery can be dismantled to fit into a container, then lashed down to secure your cargo for shipping. Weight restrictions may limit the type of cargo transported in containers, which is why our staff offer shipping advice that is customised to your cargo, budget, timeframe and other requirements. Shipping containers ensures a weatherproof and secure transit for your cargo (in comparison to flat racks and open top containers). Shipping containers are usually 20-foot or 40-foot in length.

?

?? Full Container Load (FCL) ??

When your cargo fills a 20-foot or 40-foot shipping container, it is a full container load (FCL). When containers are full (or you pay for exclusive use, instead of sharing the container space with others), they have a lower risk of damage as they are sealed at the port of origin and then only opened when they reach the destination. FCL has an excellent cost per unit (in comparison to LCL), especially if you have fragile cargo i.e. spare/fragile equipment, parts or components.

?

?? Less than Container Load (LCL) ??

When your shipment is smaller in volume and will not fill a shipping container, less than container load (LCL) may be a more economical option for your cargo. The goods (cargo) from several shippers – from the same load port to destination port – are consolidated into one shipping container. You only pay for the volume your cargo occupies, however this container option may result in longer handling times (and an increase in handling and therefore risk).

?

MULTIMODAL SHIPPING

When two or more freight modes are utilised for your cargo i.e. sea, road, rail and/or air. This may be an option to reduce transit times for your cargo and is also part of our door-to-door service we offer our clients: for example, picking up their machinery from the manufacturer, then arranging delivery to the mine site (or company yard).
