In career-oriented people, over-criticism and perfectionism are all-too-common traits. This is likely based on the belief that such characteristics are helpful and constructive, serving to edit for optimal performance. In reality, it is quite the opposite, with negative thinking being a significant drawback that takes up valuable mental real estate. According to a Forbes article by Bryan Robinson, Ph d., self-love is crucial to job performance and success. The author cites research that found individuals who practice self-love and self-care are more likely to be engaged in their work and less likely to experience burnout. Additionally, people with a positive self-image and high levels of self-esteem were more effective communicators and collaborators, likely due to better interpersonal skills rooted in self-belief. Being critical and negative toward ourselves and our business practice is effective in the short term, but it is putting a bandage on an ever-growing wound.?
Inwardly directed compassion and forgiveness are incredibly effective tools for dealing with mistakes. A study published by Science Direct found that “self-forgiveness can be conceptualized as a series in changes of motivation, in which the motivation to…engage in self-punishment are decreased, while the motivation to act benevolently toward oneself increases.” The study, which observed a pool of 119 university students studying for exams, concluded that the students who were able to exercise self-forgiveness for procrastinating were unlikely to engage in those behaviors again, as opposed to those who were critical and negative towards themselves, which ended up repeating the behavior. This incredibly enlightening conclusion challenges the idea that anger and disappointment are the default emotions that failure should invoke. It paints these emotions as an even more significant obstacle than the failure itself.?
