How to look for a tech job in 2024?

"I am doing everything right but I can't find a job?"

I get many messages like this, so I wanted to write a brief article to potentially help out.?

Accept the market sucks -- it's not you.

2021: Anyone with a pulse could get a tech job.?

2022: Zuckerberg (in)famously said, "There are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn’t be here."??

2023: 1,193 tech companies laid off 264,220 employees.

2024: You get a job.

Set this goal - you will get rejected by 500 positions. Now either you will get a job or you will make progress to achieve this goal! Worst thing you can do is let rejections get to you and waste your time / deplete your mental energy.??

Don't confuse movement for progress -- be intentional.

1. Use levels.fyi to find jobs - not LinkedIn, Indeed or any other useless job board. They have 2,974 jobs for Product Managers in the US that were posted in the last 30 days. Narrow down by salary, location, title, etc. as needed. Apply with referrals, if possible.
2. Find top VC firms - Google the list. Many of them will have a consolidated list of jobs from all the startups they invest in. Example for Insights Partner. Great place to find jobs.
3. Leverage friends - get coffee with them. Ask them if their team/org is hiring. Usually they can find the recruiter and send them a message like "I know this person who will be perfect for this job." Worst case, they can refer you at least. Don't have friends like that? Make new ones from college clubs, alumni, strangers on LinkedIn, etc.
4. Stalk people on LinkedIn. Search for #hiring, #job, etc. - a great way to find people you could reach out to for referral.?

Apply to 25 jobs a day. Obviously, make sure your resume is good and prepare for the interviews in parallel too.?

Get a llama.?

This is going to be exhausting. Make sure you have a friend you can hug when things get particularly rough - someone you can vent to any time. For me that was Llama - my friend's nickname.

For what it's worth, I have personally helped dozens of my friends and their besties. They all followed this approach. How many of them got a job? 100% of them. You will too - you got this!
