How local governments can gain the trust of the community?

Local governments play a vital role in shaping the lives of their constituents, and the decisions they make have a significant impact on their communities. Building trust with citizens is essential for effective governance, yet nationwide, civic engagement remains low. According to the National Research Center, only 19% of Americans reached out to local officials in the past year, and just 25% attended a public meeting, underscoring the challenge of low participation.??

To foster greater engagement, local governments must prioritize earning their citizens' trust. This can be achieved through three key strategies: increasing transparency, actively listening to community needs, and enhancing digital accessibility. In this newsletter, we’ll explore how these strategies build trust and how digital transformation can drive the success of local governments.??

Increased Transparency???

Local governments can gain the trust of their constituents by being transparent in their decision-making process. When constituents can see how decisions are made, they are more likely to trust that their best interests are being taken into account. There are several ways to increase transparency.???

One approach is to publish all local government meetings online. This allows people to see what is being discussed and makes it easier for them to provide input. Additionally, local governments can post agendas for upcoming meetings on their website and social media channels so that people know what to expect. Posting meetings online also enables those who couldn’t attend to stay informed at their convenience.???

Another way to foster transparency is by sharing data with the public. Data such as updates on city projects, community crime statistics, budget information, and more can be valuable for constituents. It helps them see where the community is headed and make informed decisions about their own lives. Publishing this data online ensures it is accessible to everyone. Being transparent with data also shows the community that the government has nothing to hide, which, in turn, builds trust.???

Active Listening???

An important part of gaining trust is being able to listen to the community and take their opinions and concerns seriously. One way to do this is by holding community forums or town halls. This gives community members a chance to voice their concerns and be heard. Additionally, it shows that you are taking the time to listen to what they have to say. Town halls have the benefit of being more personal than more traditional ways of reporting concerns such as surveys or forms. It gives constituents the chance to ask questions and have them answered right away, they could even ask follow-up questions if needed.??

Town halls can even be done digitally so people who need to stay home can still participate. Digital town halls also give the option of posting the recording to the government website once it is over for people to review or for people who missed it. Another way to actively listen to the community is by setting up an online platform where people can submit their ideas for things they would like to see in their community.??

This could be anything from a new park to a community event. The government can then take these ideas and work on making them a reality. It would also give the government valuable data about what people in the community want. For example, if a lot of people submit the suggestion to make a new community park, it is something that would benefit numerous members of the community. Setting up online platforms for ideas and feedback shows that the community is being heard and that their ideas are being taken into account.??

Being Digitally Accessible???

Digital transformation is crucial for gaining community trust. Local governments must be online and easily accessible, demonstrating openness to feedback and a commitment to making decisions that benefit everyone. By enhancing digital accessibility, they make it simpler for constituents to find the information they need. Research indicates that 21.3% of Americans rely on assistive technologies to access digital resources, making website and mobile app accessibility essential—not just legally required—for inclusivity. Furthermore, individuals who engage with their city’s website more than once a month exhibit nearly five times higher trust in their local government. Thus, improving digital accessibility can significantly enhance citizen trust.???

So, what does it mean to be digitally accessible???

First, it requires an up-to-date, user-friendly website that is easy to navigate and contains all essential information. With many residents seeking information online, local governments must effectively communicate through a well-designed website. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 provide clear standards for accessible digital content, including image descriptions, adaptable layouts, time-based media, keyboard navigation, and screen reader compatibility. Following these guidelines removes barriers and ensures equal access to online services for individuals with disabilities.???

Additionally, local governments should undergo digital transformation to enhance service delivery. For example, as more residents pay bills online, offering only in-person or mail payment options limits accessibility. Digital accessibility means providing as many services as possible online, allowing constituents to access them at their convenience. This shift not only benefits residents but also streamlines government processes, saving time and money. By collecting, accessing, and storing valuable data, local governments can make informed decisions supported by statistical evidence.???

Ultimately, being digitally accessible is a vital step toward building trust within the community. Numerous digital solutions are available to help local governments embark on their digital transformation journey and enhance their accessibility.???

Citizens are the heart of every local government, and their trust is crucial for consistently delivering better services. By adopting a citizen-centric approach and implementing these three key strategies—increasing transparency, actively listening to community needs, and ensuring digital accessibility—local governments can strengthen relationships with their constituents and earn their trust.??
