How is it like to do an MBA from Europe? How to choose the program?

I always wanted to do an MBA with a diverse set of people. MBA to me was never a gateway to some luxurious life (trust me it's not if you are taking a loan :p). I came to learn from the best minds in the business. I came to learn from my peers. To learn about their cultures, thought processes and different industries. And in this process, I wanted to make some amazing friends, which I did.
I learned that the development of a global perspective is imperative to become a global leader. After talking to alumni from different business schools, I realized that the multi-cultural aspect of an MBA program from Europe was the one I needed to grow in my career. I came to understand how people at the workplace in different cultures think and approach a problem.
Below I would like to answer some questions (I get them a lot) which most of the MBA aspirants have (even I had).
1. How a European MBA program differs from a US MBA program?
Length of the program- Compared to their US MBA counterparts, European MBA programs are shorter. For example, INSEAD, Cambridge and Oxford are one year MBA programs. HEC and LBS can be wrapped up in 16 months.
Cost of program- MBA programs in Europe are less expensive (still a lot of money) in tuition fees than the US programs. Also, less expenditure on living as the duration of the program is shorter.
European programs are more international and culturally diverse. In general, more than 90% of the batch is international whereas US programs are 30-35% international. Hence an opportunity to learn diverse perspectives.
2. What is the Job scenario?- The most important question for everyone
Network, Network, and Network. I can't emphasize more the importance of networking here. A lot of global tech, manufacturing, and consulting firms hire from top European schools but there are some harsh truths you should be aware of before you make any decision.
- MBA is relatively a new concept in Europe. It's not valued at the same level as it is valued in the US or Asia. Some companies treat it as just another Master's. Believe me, I was told by one recruiter that a Master's student with no experience and an MBA like you with 5 years of experience will be paid at the same level. But that's just one recruiter. You will be paid better but not maybe as high as in US. So prepare yourself for that change especially if you are coming from a high paying technology firm.
- People in Europe usually do a Master's just after Bachelors. So after 5-6 years, they reach managerial positions at organizations you are applying to. As I mentioned before Masters and MBA are not very much differentiated, don't let your ego factor ignore an opportunity especially if you are an international applicant. Europeans firms value quality experience a lot. Gain that experience and I am sure you will rise with your hard work and talent. Be ready to start with an internship also. This way both the company and you can know each other better.
- Language and Visa- Client facing companies want the candidates to speak the local language. So you would like to learn a local language to enhance your opportunities. Of late Visa has become a very important factor. English speaking countries like the US, UK, and Singapore have tightened their visa policies and prefer locals. Networking is your key here. And anything is possible (trust me I have seen it).
3. How to decide which program in Europe is better for you?
Look at all the above-mentioned factors and weigh the pros and cons. If learning new languages, cultural diversity, and European experience matter to you, take the plunge. Finally, look at your short term and long term goals and see where you can achieve them. With UK increasing its post-study work limit to 2 years and working in the UK is of that importance to you, choose an MBA program from LBS, Judge or Said.
Things that may help you and enhance your MBA experience.
- Talk to alumni of different schools. Ask specific questions. Don't ask questions like my score is this and what are my chances. They really can't tell. Ask questions on the job opportunities in the sector you want to go to, class experience, language restrictions in that country and overall MBA experience. Show genuine interest.
- Salary should not be your prime consideration. You can earn anytime in your life but you gain certain experiences only once. Don't look at salaries when you are choosing a program. All top schools get you the same salary more or less.
- Don't worry too much. For most of the people (including myself) I know, MBA has been an astonishing experience that has given them exposure to plethora of opportunities in the world. Now they are proud of themselves for making the decision to do an MBA.
I just hope the above-mentioned aspects will help you in gaining a perspective on MBA from Europe and in choosing a relevant program for you. MBA is a huge investment of time and money. So consider all the pros and cons and decide carefully. Afterall You only MBA once. I wish you all the best. I am sure you will do great. :)

5 年Great article Shikhar. I would caveat 2 points: 1) if you have more than 8-9 years of experience, go for an executive MBA. Indeed, most of the post full-time MBA jobs are at an associate level and hence you might not have that career jump you are aiming at. 2) brace yourself for the job hunting process: attend as many career events as possible in the field you target. Most importantly, count on yourself to find a job rather than the school career center which you can leverage for networking and advise.
