How life should be viewed from the perspective of Education?
A young guy looks at the clock and say " I have lot of things to prove in my career!"
A middle aged person looks at the clock and say "I have to settle, get married and live a peaceful life and save for my family's future."
An old aged person looks at the clock & say "I have to retire and let my kids live their way of life peacefully."
Same clock but different perception arises for different age groups regarding the time they require to spend as per their lifestyle. You cannot insist the old person to see from the perspective of young aged and middle aged people. You cannot insist a young aged guy to look from the perspective of old aged & middle aged guy. You cannot insist the same thing to the middle aged person as well. Similarly children & teenagers have their own thinking when it comes to making a career.
A request to every elders to not to dominate the young minds when it comes to education. Yes, they should make goals for fulfilling ambitions. They should not waste their time doing nothing. It is necessary to have a watch on them. But at the same time we should build alternatives as having only one path to success is rigid. Yes, there are no shortcut to success - says the old proverb. But rationale and sincere alternative paths can also be searched for them as the world is changing. Chance should be given to them even if they fail. The sad part of the education system is that today it teaches only one rigid thing, "If you fail you are not fit to make a career. People will giggle at you from behind. Time is less. Finish everything fast to get settled and get a secured job".
First of all - Are jobs really secured nowadays? What kind of a thought process is this? What kind of an advice is this?
More than the kids it is the parents getting easily brainwashed. They are pushing their kids in the same direction thinking that they are moulding their future for a healthy life. Result - they are not moving on their path peacefully. In fact they are battling on their path with no focus of where it is leaving them exactly. Competitions is not a healthy one. It is leading to bias and not group learning. They are not been taught how to deal with a particular situation like avoiding communication gaps. Conflicts of interest not only arises in organisations. It arises between children, friends, colleagues, parents, relatives. Who we are? We all are human beings. Difference of opinion will exist. If it doesn't come out then the problems will be left unresolved. Probably it would not have even reached in the limelight of elders. Then how they can assess and conclude things? In schools and colleges, more than Parents & Teacher Interactions, a triangular interaction of Parents-Teachers-Students should be developed to improve things. A SWOT analysis has to be done.
The triangular interactions purpose should not be to discuss the ultimate result he/she has derived in their academics. But it should be about the process they have gone through while learning. Parents should arise the questions with their children like:
- Are you having any problem with learning?
- Are you finding it uncomfortable? Shall I help you out?
- Shall we both discuss with your mentor/tutor as to how we can make things easier?
- Are you able to deal with your pressures and timings of assignment submission?
- Were you able to speak to your teacher? Are your peers helping you out?
- Are you facing issues with anyone in your school/college?
Rather than asking:
- What complains I am listening about you?
- Your teacher called me. You have cut my nose(though physically it has not fallen ha ha ha).
- I have poured lakhs of money to the education institution on your behalf you fool!. Don't argue me.
- They are always right. You are wrong. Don't give excuses. Next time if any news (don't know whether it is real or fake) reach my ears you will see my real face.
- Why you are not performing well like your friend who sits next to you on the bench?
Comparison is not the solutions to our problems. We should stop comparing. This is the reason things are becoming worst. Learning should teach them to face trial & errors because we learn from errors. Don't get disappointed if they face errors. Motivate or assist them to overcome the errors.
How clerical education flourished in and is spoiling a path in one's career success? -There was a world where people especially our grandparents or great grandparents migrated from rural to urban areas for a good living many years before. It was an Industrial revolution era. So they went through pains thus withdrawing the rural lifestyle. They mortgaged their farm land for their children's future to get urban education & enjoy a good standard of living. Make their teen children study in one of the prestigious colleges or mediocre colleges to grab a good degree for a good career. But there was some value to those degrees till the end of 1970s. But from mid 80s & early 90s, education was not only seen as a basic knowledge driven programme but also a basis to fulfill luxurious lifestyle. Its definiton got completely changed. There was advent of IT development. Technology driven lifestyle rapidly arised. This lead to rising competitions. This is where things started to go upside down. We were managing the jobs offered by MNC in various sectors of the economy like Banks,Insurance,FMCG, IT, Pharma, Automobile etc. Various graduates craved for good placements as if like a crowd has gathered near a well where there is plenty of groundwater. Stressful & unhealthy competition increased as a result.
Impact of 2nd millenium on education:-
The world noticed another phase of incidents from the period of 2005-2010. Global recessions, Job layoffs & Automation changed the approach of urban living drastically for the past one decade. This has shown a huge impact on education as well. We are following a rat race even today where skills have been updated yet the education system has been outdated. Entrepreneurial skills are required to be built rather than managaerial skills that is been taught in every institutes.
Rising tuition fees, steep rise of education debts & rigid entrance or gateway test in chase for a good college admissions is altogether a biggest challenge in front of everyone. First we expect the young lots to select a career stream which they are not even aware of how it is going to be. Then we put them in a bubble for 3-4 years that would have at least developed peer understanding. But it may not enhance his learning to a huge extent. No education institutions can develop real life situations to explain you of how to face challenges when they arise and gain opportuinities wherever they are availed. It is ultimately on the young generations who have to come up with their own thought process to explore things.
Today no MNCs are expecting graduated youngsters to just nod their heads & manage tasks in jobs after they finish their degree. But they expect them to be creative enough to solve unexpected crisis and new cases that may or may not have arised before. Skills matter in the long run.
Ultimate message:-
If these young lots have to be creative and matured when they are grown ups, it is necessary for the parents to teach them right from the early age. When they are kids under the age of three to four years, develop communication rather than teaching them to mug up answers for some arbitrary marks or credits. Develop a group or a family discussion with them on any particular topic from social point of view. It is the parents who should sit and speak with them. So that it is possible to read and undertstand their natural strength and weakness. Probably it will be possible to cure them softly at an early age. Learning and seeking starts from home and everytime not from kindergarten.
Slowly and gradually when they reach the age of seven or eight make them involve with peers to develop group discussions so as to remove fear of public speaking in their mind. This will also help building self confidence. They will start giving suggestions. Such things should be started at a young age. Here shyness might go away. They may develop a capability of problem-solving ability that may be required in the future.
But what we are exactly doing with them?
In the name of discipline and politeness we are draining their creativity, grabbing the freedom of speech from them & making them go bookish to face the rat race with peers. At the same time we expect them to be matured, wise and creative enough after a tiresome rat race. This should not happen. We should prepare them for a good future with peace & not to equip them for a war.
