UNLOCK YOUR HIDDEN POTENTIAL: HOW 'LYING TO YOURSELF' CAN IGNITE YOUR SUCCESS

At the end of Adam Sandler’s acceptance speech for the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, he said a few words that have hung in my mind for weeks now.?

His words were a parting piece of advice that referenced the story he told to explain how he had come to create his phenomenal success as a comedian, actor, writer, producer, and musician.?

The story starts with how his parents and brother always told him he was fantastic at everything he did. Sandler told stories of countless people throughout his life who made him believe he was far greater than he was and he shared how he simply took to seeing himself that way too.

Sandler summed up the secret to creating phenomenal success in life with these simple words of advice…

“Keep lying to yourselves, everybody.”?

Whilst I think anyone reading this will likely acknowledge the generative power of seeing yourself as greater than you are, in my experience there are two major obstacles to taking on ‘lying to ourselves’ as a habit or practice.?

First, we are addicted to truth. And not just any truth, a very particular scientific rational kind of truth. We like the kind of truth that is based on evidence, where evidence is objective, measurable, and, by definition, of the past.

Here in lies the obstacle. As long as we are limiting ourselves to always speaking and thinking of ourselves based on evidence from the past, our growth will occur at a snail's pace. We’ll inch forward with the great weight of our personal history on our backs.?

Second, seeing ourselves as greater than we are, means we run the risk of an over-inflated ego. One who lies to themselves as grander risks being called out as too big for their boots or britches.? In an even more confronting way, someone who lies about who they are and what they’re capable of could simply fail to deliver, exposing their lie.?

As long as we consider the risk of being called out or found out as having greater cost than benefit, we will keep from lying to ourselves. We’ll remain honest but to a fault. The fault is a direct correlate to our unexpressed potential.?

The tension though, will live on within us. We will meet it in the projected judgment of others as over the top, egomaniacal, self-interested, and grandiose.?

We will praise humility wherever we see it, not realizing our confabulation with diminishment.

But there will be moments when the paradox of both love and power presents itself, and it will rattle us at the place where we have chosen a path in a false choice. When someone as simultaneously grand and humble as Adam Sandler encourages us to ‘keep lying to ourselves’, we will, for a moment, do a double-take at his clever line, for we recognize both the stab of judgment and the pearl of wisdom. If we are present and willing, we will let it wake us from our slumber of sensibility. We will dip our toes in the waters of a fabricated future, enter the imaginarium of a grander being, and let the lead in our tongues begin turning to gold as we speak.

At my free monthly talk, on Thursday this week, I will be diving deep into both the obstacles and liberating possibilities of lying to ourselves about who we are and what we’re capable of.

I’ll share my ongoing journey with activating ways of being transcendent of circumstances and actualities, and how my life continues to rise to meet those imaginings. I’ll share the emotional and existential challenges I’ve faced in this practice - and how I’ve overcome them, time and time again.?

If you have ever found yourself wanting to believe in something greater for yourself and your life but found the strong winds of reality blowing back at you with insurmountable strength, then you do not want to miss this talk.

You will come away, both inspired to lie to yourself with great love, freedom, and power and also with practical tools for doing so.?

Whilst we are now providing a 24-hour replay for these talks to all those who register, in a world of content abundance, there is still no greater experience than being with us live.?

The details of the stories and distinctions I’ll share come to me fractions of a second before they are spoken and heard. Your response and attentiveness, which I access via your beautiful face and the spirit of your name, create and guide me as I speak.?

Know that if you do listen to the replay, while it was me speaking, I was not alone.

PS - We have extended the size of the Zoom meeting room capacity, so everyone should get in, but we did have close to 300 attendees (between live and replay) last month, so it would still be good to be on time.

PPS - I’ve got an exciting announcement coming at the end of my talk too. It involves London - and there are limited seats! ????????
