Are you invisible at work? According to co-authors Tom Rath and Donald Clifton in their 2004 Gallup Press book titled “How Full Is Your Bucket, back then 65 percent of Americans believed they receive zero recognition for their work. Do you think those numbers have improved? I seriously doubt it.
More recent studies will tell you that your CEO is by and large concerned about identifying potential and developing the next generation of leaders. She or he is very interested in finding all the hidden talent and potential in their companies. So it’s not surprising that your corporate training budgets, especially those allocated to leadership development, have very likely grown pretty steadily over the past few years. According to the Training Industry’s “The State of the Leadership Training Market,” in 2018 alone organizations around the world spent about $3.4 billion on leadership development solutions. And most futurists predict this number will continue to increase.
Yet, despite this investment and your CEO's most fervent passion, as well as the efforts on the part of your HR departments to push managers to be more curious about searching and finding team members who might be “hidden talent diamonds,” it’s simply not happening consistently. Why is that?
Well, I’m sure you’ve noticed that managers and leaders are super-busy. And like most of us, they miss a lot of what is going on around them. In today’s busy companies, it is highly unlikely that your manager is going to make a special effort to notice your development potential simply because you show up and work hard.
So what can you do? Well as it turns out, plenty. As my podcast guest for this week, Stephen Krempl, will tell you, you just need to develop a few “power skills.” And as an ERG or BRG leader, you certainly have more than your fair share of opportunities to develop and exercise “power skills.” These "power skills" will make you visible and known in your company, And being known is super important because as Stephen often says, "It's not who you know, its who knows you." After my interview with Stephan, you will also hear from our panel discussion with Latya Taylor of AT&T and Christopher Mostello from Avanade to learn more about how to put yourself on the right radar.
