When working with candidates on their resumes, I often recommend relying on ChatGPT as a valuable tool to create and refine their documents. This AI-powered assistant can help you craft a resume that effectively highlights your experience and skills. Here are some tips on how to best use ChatGPT to create and enhance your resume:
1. Approach It as a Conversation
Think of using ChatGPT as having a conversation with a helpful advisor. Start a new chat session and tell the system that you're creating a resume for yourself. ChatGPT will guide you through the process, asking questions to gather the necessary information and provide suggestions.
2. Share Detailed Career Information
Provide as much detail as possible about your career. You know your career path better than anyone else, and it’s crucial that the resume reflects your unique experience and strengths. Start by doing a "data dump" of everything you can think of related to your career history. Write this as if telling a story, or you can even copy and paste information from your LinkedIn profile. The more information you provide, the better ChatGPT can assist. Include key details like the dates (or at least months and years) of roles, job titles, and the companies where you worked.

3. Prompt for Additional Details
If you’re short on details for a particular role or need ideas of what to include, prompt ChatGPT for more information. For example, you could say: “Can you add to my work at [insert company name], including typical tasks that a [insert job title] would be responsible for?” However, always remember to double-check for accuracy to ensure the information aligns with your experience.
4. Refine for Conciseness and Focus
If your resume becomes too long or contains too much information, ask ChatGPT to make it more concise. You can specify which details to keep or highlight. For example, “For my positions before [choose a date], make the descriptions of those roles more concise (no more than two bullet points), but ensure to include anything relevant to [pertinent skill].”
5. Download a Formatted Resume
Once you’re satisfied with the content, ask ChatGPT for a formatted version of the resume. A simple prompt like “Can you create a document formatted as a resume, including all the information?” will generate a link to a downloadable file. Review the document carefully for accuracy and completeness.
You can use a template from Microsoft Word or another word processor to make it visually appealing. There are also specialized tools on the market that offer advanced resume building and formatting options, though they may come with a cost. Even if you're considering a paid option, starting with ChatGPT’s free assistance and the tips outlined here is a smart move.
