There are 2 types of learning

(1) For exposure , like you read newspapers, there is no outcome expected, no commitment, a lot of people read a lot here. It is good (not always optimum), I read about taste, stats, history (sometimes) etc

(2) For action and wisdom, I call it purposeful reading - this is where people struggle, as there is an outcome needed, a time restriction ..

When your reading time is limited, give atleast 50% of your reading time to purposeful reading, read what is needed for this phase of your life, example: when I was hiring in my first company, I read a lot about hiring, even after 10 years I remember a lot of it as it was purposeful, even my blog was voted as one of the top blogs in HR, I read a lot about HR as my job was to hire, manage, train people https://aji.techshu.com/2006/12/14/grmtech-leader/ ... now when you want to master a subject, it is said it needs 10,000 hours, but there are ways to master any subject faster , how to learn things faster, here are some tips

(1) Write your own book by compiling all learning from all places

(2) Start your learning with different books and indexes

(3) See the master of the subject and follow their course or index ... attend all sessions but don't learn, just create dots

(4) Then make your structure , index clear

(5) Then meet a person who is master in the subject, a lunch , dinner etc, I had thrown a family dinner as the person did not had time and only time he was available was late night and wanted his time with his family, so I offered family dinner and with my irritating persuasion person gave up and came for it with his family :), we spent some time on the subject

(6) Now read about each index, keep making sub indexes and notes

(7) Always remember the final goal in mind while making all of these.

(8) After some time, start connecting dots and make a picture, repeat it few times, you will be surprised how you can challenge any expert, there are tricks on how to learn from YouTube etc , that I will share soon :)

By doing all of this, you can learn subjects faster, rest is about practice, also you have a different background, so your learning can be unique and can add different dimension to the subject, rapid learning is key to today's eco system.
