How to learn effectively

How to learn effectively

Times have changed, and the days of one job for life are well and truly gone. These days, it’s typical for people to have several different careers or indeed a portfolio of different roles all at the same time. Additionally, advances in technology have meant that we are expected absorb vast amounts of information through all the various communication channels. In today's world, to remain relevant and current, you have to be committed to lifelong learning and updating our knowledge and skills continuously. So, knowing 'how to learn effectively' can help accelerate your performance, results and career.

With that in mind, here's five top tips on how to learn effectively:

1.???Create a resourceful state of mind

Take time to prepare yourself for training and learning so that you are focused and in the best possible frame of mind with minimal distractions. Think about the training or learning outcomes and visualise the benefits of what you will be learning and the outcomes it will bring to you, your role and your business.

2.???Know your learning preferences

Consider your multi-sensory learning preferences. How do you learn best through seeing, hearing, or doing? Are you more visual, auditory or kinaesthetic? Do you prefer to visualise, to listen or to actively try something out? Take a learning styles assessment so that your learn by playing to your strengths.

3.???Memorise the key information

Write clear notes, draw mind-maps or doodle and think ahead to when and how this learning will be useful and in what scenarios. Here are some useful areas to pose questions to accelerate your understanding of a subject when you are learning or receiving training:

  • Assumptions – Ask questions about any assumptions to uncover more information.
  • Evidence – Ask about facts or research that support a concept or technique.
  • Illustration – Ask for practical illustrations to bring the learning to life to you, your work and your business.
  • Opinions – Ask questions to encourage opinions around the subject.
  • Unique – Ask questions to pin-point any novel aspects of the learning and/or applications.

?4.???Practice and test your competence

I have a saying, 'all training is a waste of time unless something changes', so find ways to practice and test the knowledge and skills you have acquired either during the training or as soon after the training as possible. This is a critical phase for the learning process and will begin to embed what you’re learning into your work and forming new habits or skills. If you don't use it, you lose it.

5.???Reflect on your learning

After training or learning, reflect on what you have learnt and the difference it is making to your work, life or to others. Also, how can you improve 'how you are learning', next time around?

What will you apply when you are next participating in training or learning?

These are the fundamental stages of learning we consider when designing training to ensure effective learning experiences that make a lasting impact to teams and their business results.

Learning how to learn really should be the first lesson in school! Becoming an NLP practitioner was the first time I REALLY understood how my brain worked and came away feeling as though this was the instruction manual we should have all been given at birth! Some great tips here, Richard!

Follow up coaching and having a management system that reinforces learning so it can be transferred into the workplace is critical; training has no value if people don’t do anything differently
