There’s a very old saying that “employees don’t leave jobs, they leave managers”. Maybe on some level, it’s true. Successful organizations have ethical managers that lead by example. They shine a light on the path ahead. They also show employees how to handle failure and what kind of behaviors they should have. In return, employees mirror their manager’s behavior. They walk in their footsteps, learn from their mistakes, and contribute meaningful ideas.
But what does leading by example actually mean?
To lead by example means to guide others through your behavior instead of your words. Your intention is to inspire others to copy your behavior. The mark of a good leader lies in their ability to “walk the talk.”
Below are benefits of leading by example;
Boosts employee morale?—?A great manager’s actions influences his/her employees attitude, satisfaction, and overall performance. When managers lead by example, morale goes up which leads to greater company loyalty and higher productivity.

Builds trust and respect?—?Managers who lead by example expect to receive trust and respect from their Employees. The employees see such managers as people who are capable of running a team, and as trusted mentors.
Promotes a positive work culture?—?Organizations that have managers who “walk the talk” embody these values daily. This commitment to workplace values inspires a positive work culture and happy employees.
Increases productivity?—?It’s easier for employees to be more productive when they see their manager doing the hard work, keeping commitments, and focusing on shared outcomes. There tends to be a deeper desire to work hard and do work that makes the team proud. When a manager’s actions and words align, employees don’t waste energy trying to decode their intent or agenda.
Managers play an essential role in the employee experience, which means they have a responsibility in employee retention. Giving managers the tools (training, technology, and support) to do their job well, will benefit the employees, the company and the managers.
