How Leaders Hurt Us

How Leaders Hurt Us

You want to know why I've spent the last year offering programs on productivity, motivation, influence, and executive buy-in??Because that's where people have been saying their pain is.

When I speak to change leaders one on one, they say they need to be more productive, more motivated, more influential, and better at getting buy-in to make the change they know is needed in their organizations.

But I have more data on why the need is so great. Here are the results of my most recent LinkedIn poll:

Lack of leadership accountability is MOST frustrating when leaders don't...

  • Uphold cultural expectations (14%)
  • Set and meet clear goals (45%)
  • Provide resources/communicate (14%)
  • Treat people fairly (27%)

FRUSTRATION CAUSES FATIGUE

No wonder we're all feeling unproductive and unmotivated. When people don't have clear goals, don't feel they are treated fairly, don't have the resources they need, and trying to navigate an inconsistent culture, they become frustrated, fatigued, and burnt out.

ROOT CAUSE

The problem is that we can become as productive and motivated as we'd like and we can learn how to influence and get buy-in with the best of them. But when leadership teams...

  • don't have a clear sense of what they are building by when (a practical vision)
  • are not working together toward that vision (alignment)
  • and are not held accountable for doing their part toward that vision (accountability)

The WHOLE ORGANIZATION suffers and will continue to suffer. In fact, as one of my recent research participants shared:

"It is an inverse relationship. The more misaligned a leadership team is, the more suffering there is at the front line because of that misalignment."

I'VE BEEN THERE BEFORE

As many of you know, I've been there. I've been in organizations where the misalignment has brought me to my knees. Those organizations have frittered away time, money, opportunity, and good will. I've also had the absolute joy of helping organizations get a vision, get aligned, and have their leaders learn to hold one another accountable. Those organizations have increased their EBIDTA, transformed their cultures, and grown their market share.

ARE YOU THERE NOW?

If you are experiencing (or witnessing) these organizational struggles, and you didn't grab the free gift I offered last time, here it is again. DM or email ([email protected]) me with "Power Bundle" in the subject line and I'll send you my "Leadership Power Bundle" for FREE which you can use to evaluate a leadership team you're working with.?

WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?

I'm on a mission to end suffering at work. Strong, healthy leadership is the answer. Strong, healthy leadership creates sustainable profit, happier customers, and more productive employees. Strong, healthy leadership doesn't damage mental health, it uplifts it.

As always,

Be Uncommon.

Wow - you nailed it. You've described one of my early corporate employers that motivated my move to small business. Unfortunately, many leaders in those kind of toxic organizations think they are doing it the right way. They have forgotten what it's like to be a worker bee.
