How Leaders Drive Success Through Relationships, Social Platforms, and Purpose (Q&A)

I had the distinct pleasure of spending time with the team from PwC Australia this past week. During our time together, we had the opportunity to discuss many interesting topics, and below are some highlights from the conversations we had.

Leadership and Interpersonal Relationships

First we need to define leadership success. My preferred definitions is that a successful leader is one who inspires an internal commitment in individuals towards a shared mission.

So, Leadership is all interpersonal relationships because in order to inspire people you are required to truly connect with them, and inspire them to know that by joining this mission their lives will be better and more meaningful.

Extraordinary Leaders

Something extraordinary leaders do is create intimacy at scale - that is, they are not bound by a face to face relationship. They are able to create true interpersonal relationships, even though they are operating at scale. Each and every individual they interact with feels an intimate relation with the leader.

Social Platforms and Currency

We used to live in a world where your identity was physical - there was no platform or mechanism to spread one's identity without them physically being there, or having a physical asset that represented them. Today, we live in a digital world, with social media and a virtual network. In this digital world, we can all participate in building our identity to continue our professional development.

Creating Allies

The best alliances are the ones that serve mutual benefit. Either people share a purpose or they can each be helpful to one another. A critical component of the best alliances are that both of your lives are better off because you have collaborated with one another. So it is critical for each person to ask themselves, when creating alliances, "Is my world better because I collaborated with this individual?"

Inspiring with Purpose

Inspiration starts with purpose. Human energy looks towards the future, and we all want to create something meaningful and of significance in the future. Given this, to inspire someone is to show them a future that not only transforms the external environment, but transforms them internally as well.

In the video below I have shared these thoughts:

Insightful. There are some fundamental factors to leadership effectiveness that are important such as integrity - as someone once put 'people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care'. You don't mention them I imagine precisely because you consider them a given. Not always the case sadly.

Rightly said that it is critical for each person to ask themselves, when creating alliances, "Is my world better because I collaborated with this individual?". Leaders create win-win solutions for all. They not just lead, they carry people with them. That's their charisma, their potential to form a connect with people. A person who has this can lead big teams successfully and blessed are those organizations which have such leaders.
