How To Lead By Example (And Why It Matters)

Have you ever wondered why some businesses fail and others succeed?
The answer is usually: The Psychology of the Leader.
Conscious leaders create the space for teams to grow and they lead by example. In a sense they shine a light on the path. They also demonstrate how to handle failure and the kind of mindset they should have.
The result is a team that mirror their leaders’ behavior. They contribute meaningful ideas, embody their ideas and values.
Before we cover how to lead by example, let’s review why it's so important.
Not too long ago I worked with a leader that was inconsistent in words and actions. Week to week, month to month it became harder and harder to work with this person. Why? Weak and egotistical leadership creates uncertainty and a breakdown in trust that ripples like wild fire.
"Do as I say and not as I do" does not work because that behaviour gets mirrored and the result is an uncommitted team that doesn't trust.
As a leader, you have the power to inspire and motivate your team towards achieving the common goals of your organization. Just as you have the power to inspire you also have the power to tarnish if you aren't aware.
The role of a leader is not just limited to delegating tasks and making decisions. It is about setting an example and creating a positive work culture where everyone feels valued and respected.
To help you become a better leader, I have compiled a few strategies that you can implement in your life:
1. Communication is key: Effective communication is the cornerstone of a successful team. Make sure you regularly communicate with your team, listen to their ideas and concerns, and address their needs.
a.) Notice patterns in communication. Are they holding back or free to communicate?
b.) Be approachable.
c.) Respect boundaries.
2. Be the change you want to see: As a leader, you get to set an example for your team to follow by being authentic, consistent and aligned. If you expect them to be punctual, work hard, and be respectful, you should demonstrate these values yourself.
Try this: Be authentic. Own your humanity when you make mistakes. You don't have to be perfect, just be willing to take responsibility for your thoughts, feelings and emotions, especially when things go sideways.

3. Embrace feedback: Feedback is your friend, and it can help you grow and evolve as a leader. Encourage your team to provide honest feedback and take it positively. If you feel triggered- good! That means it is ready to be transformed.
Try this: Ask, "What is your experience of me?" Encourage the team to be open and honest. This is a powerful action and takes courage.
4. Recognize achievements: Recognize your team's achievements, no matter how big or small. A little appreciation can go a long way in boosting their morale and motivation. When you can recognize their personality styles and recognize their achievements based on their needs this takes that to the next level. Not sure what their personality style is? 5. Empower your team: Give your team the autonomy to make decisions and take ownership of their work. Trust and empower them to bring their best to the table. Micromanaging is your control- let it go and trust. The Alpha type has the most challenges with this, it's ok "You got this!"
The trick is to apply these tips to your work. How can you do that right away? Put it in your structure. Plan to apply these strategies and consciously work on them until they become habits.
