How A Layoff Can Be The Exact Time To Write That Book

For people who have thought about writing a book, being laid off could seem like a terrible time to consider such an action. But what if your mindset was to turn the bad of being laid off into good? If you were offered some kind of severance package, no time could be the better to write that book. Think of all the times you have wanted to write a book but have been distracted by all the obligations at work. While investing in a coach for book writing seems frivolous when a job has gone away, investing in building a new direction for your future has opened up for you. You can grab the bull by the horns or you can spend the next year paralyzed by fear.
If you want to know more about how to work through negative emotions to get to a more positive place for happiness, Hidden Brain's host Shankar Vedantam is exploring these topics this month. The key is taking something that appears bad, and turning it into good. Taking the bad of being laid off, and turning it into an opportunity to invest in coaching to finally write that powerhouse book which could reveal to you a whole new direction for your career. Having one relationship end to discover a better one waiting in the wings, or being fired from a job only to be offered one that is a way better fit. So if you are someone who has been laid off in these major cutbacks of staff by corporations as of late such as Google, Disney, Twitter or Twilio, look at how you can take this time and drill down into that long held book dream. Do you want to be miserable or do you want to tap into what the gift is of this time?
I am also concurrently in a program Positive Intelligence by Shirzad Chamine. We work to identify the saboteurs and judges in our head that block us from being happy and productive. We also look at taking a different approach to problems from a place of power and self-command. If I don't sign a client or miss an opportunity, I can look from a place of curiosity at what else could be done in place of that time. Maybe there is another opportunity waiting in the wings I would have missed if I was consumed by this position I was banking on.

I believe energy clears the way for our desires if they are big enough. I am not being callous or insensitive to say anyone losing a job is a blessing. But since it is done, you can make the choice to look at what you want to fulfill in that time. If it is a book, then you were just given the gift to get to it!
