Pilar Guzman says her journey into?entrepreneurship ?was?both an accident and a message from “the universe and God.”?The 45-year-old co-founder and CEO of Miami-based Half Moon Empanadas can see it clearly now—how her yearning to?make a difference ?in the world would be fulfilled by building a business through which she could both share a food she loved and help her team members (particularly women) grow into leaders.

But at the start, her calling wasn’t so obvious. And claiming it would require her to take some audacious risks.

Guzmán was born in Veracruz, Mexico, the daughter of an entrepreneurial father who sold dyes for clothing and other materials. For women in Mexico, though, limitations were suffocating, Guzmán says.
