Growing up in a household where financial security was a constant question mark, Lisa Virtue learned resilience and independence from an early age. In this conversation Lisa shares how these formative experiences shaped her journey into career coaching, with a special focus on empowering women facing similar vulnerable transitions.
From leveraging scholarships to stretching credit cards while studying abroad, Lisa never let financial hurdles diminish her passion. Her career path evolved from athletics to aquatics management, eventually leading her to San Diego, where she built a team from the ground up.
Lisa also opens up about her transition from athletic coaching to career coaching, emphasizing the power of mentorship, personal growth, and recognizing one's entrepreneurial potential. Through her podcast "Her Career Studio," she offers holistic career advice with a touch of spirituality, helping listeners align their resources with life goals.
“What I've realized is my niche: people that are in a vulnerable state. Either their confidence is shot for some reason, or they've been laid off and now their confidence is shot, or they just are struggling in the job search, or they're having interviews but they're not landing them and they're not getting job offers. Those are the people that I help the most. So it's all about telling your career story in a way that's going to captivate and engage your audience.“ - Lisa Virtue
Themes explored:
-Financial scarcity can be a motivator. Lisa shared that money was scarce in her family when she was growing up. As a result, when she was 14 years old she got a worker’s permit and began to work out of the house earning her own money. She figured out how to open a bank account and began to save. By the time she was 24 years old she had been working for a decade and knew she was good at creating programs and training staff.
-Confidence breeds confidence. Lisa remembers at 11 years old taking an early bus to swimming practice; that experience of independence helped her to develop resilience and take risks. She had a successful athletic career in high school, playing water polo and as captain of the swim team. She went on to pursue roles in athletics in general and aquatics in particular, which built confidence in her management and leadership skills.
-Be careful not to dilute your focus by saying yes to too many things. Lisa decided to leave her corporate job in order to pursue leadership coaching for women. At the same time that she took on coaching clients, she started an online boutique selling goods made by female producers who didn’t have anywhere to sell during Covid. She ended up raiding her 401(k) to fund the business, losing money, and diluting her focus from her coaching business.
-Your mindset is very powerful. Lisa believes that we have more control than we believe we do. When you lead with purpose and mission, the opportunities will find you. People come into our lives because we need them to teach us a lesson or because we need their support. She urges us to know that, when you have an intuitive pull, pay attention to it.?
