How To Know If You’ve Been Born Again According To The Scriptures

The first time we read about being born again is when Jesus speaks to Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, in John chapter 3:3-6…

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

This spiritual rebirth involves water and spirit.

The other reference to being born again is 1 Pet 1:22-25…

Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:?

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:

But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

We are born again by obeying the word, the gospel, the apostles preached. What exactly did they preach? For that, we must go to the Book of Acts. Every book after Acts was written to born again believers who already obeyed the gospel.

What Peter preached in Acts 2:38-39 is the same gospel repeated throughout the entire book.

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”

We aren’t born again by merely believing in God or attending church. New birth is a powerful experience based on obedience.

We are born of the water by baptism in Jesus’ name for the remission of sins.

We are born of the Spirit when we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
