How To Know The Customer So Well That You're In Their Heads

"I don't have time to do research!"

In the world of marketing, consumer research is crucial.

But sometimes, we often overlook it...

Thinking that we know the market well enough.

Or believing that it is too time-consuming and it’s a waste of time.

The result?

Generic problem identified,

Generic solution provided.

Generic content.

= Crappy Results

Frustrated by my poor results, I started to do my research very seriously.

To do so, I pretend I am an end user, looking for the best product in the market.?

First, I used a platform called “Answer The Public”.

By typing in the product category,

It will look all over the internet over the query and break down into questions that consumers would ask about the product category.

Imagine you're the owner of a chocolate bar and looking to get feedback:

From there on, I copy the questions asked and search them within forums/groups:

By typing in answerthepublic queries such as…

- "What's good about [Product Category]?"

- "How is it like using [Product Category]?"

- “Is [Product Category]?”

- “Things to know before I buy [Product Category]?”


This would showcase things such as:

(i) Customer’s unfiltered opinions about their experience within the product category

(ii) What competitors stood out among the forums

(iii) What are their concerns they have before, during and after using the products


Here are some platforms you can try out:

  • Reddit
  • Quora
  • Facebook Groups
  • Google Reviews
  • YouTube

After doing consumer research,

You can paint out their pain points so clearly…

You can make an offer so good that they can’t refuse…

Because you truly know what your customer wants!
