How to keep yourself together for your kid’s sake
Keeping yourself in check during your divorce is no easy task. When you go through a divorce, things can easily get overwhelming and your self-care routine starts to get pushed lower and lower on your daily to-do list. It can feel impossible to stay strong, but when you’re a parent, losing your strength isn’t an option. Just as a divorce can be devasting for you and your spouse, it’s also hard for your kids. They need you, but how can you be there for someone else when you can’t even be there for yourself?
Stay strong during your divorce and be there for your kids by keeping these key strategies in mind.
Let yourself be emotional.
Despite common belief, being strong and being emotional can go hand in hand. You need to give yourself a proper amount of time to grieve about your divorce. It can be hard to let go of your grief if you keep everything bottled up inside. Before you can move forward, you need to let your emotions out in a safe space and there is nothing wrong with breaking down into tears when needed.
Make a plan.
Once you’ve started moving on from the grieving stage, it’s time to make a plan. What are the things you are looking forward to after your divorce is settled? What are some things you wanted to do during your marriage that you were discouraged from doing? What are your dreams and aspirations? Stop leaning on the negatives of your divorce and start looking forward to the positives.
Stay active.
Finding different ways to channel your emotions is good to have during a divorce. Whether that be exercising, starting a new hobby, or even meditation. You deserve to feel good about yourself and do something positive for your mind and body. What better way to do that than by engaging in healthy active living? Start doing what makes you happy. When you’re happy, things will start to look a little brighter and a little better every day.
Find support.
As we’ve mentioned in one of our earlier blogs you shouldn’t be confiding in your children about your divorce. If you need to vent to someone about your divorce, consult a close friend or relative you can trust. Remember, we are supposed to be there for our kids, not the other way around. If necessary, seek professional help such as a therapist.
A divorce is never easy. There was once a time when you and your spouse loved each other more than anyone else, and now that time is over. However, don’t think of your divorce as the end, but rather as a new beginning. Stay strong during your divorce, not just for yourself, but for your kids as well.
