How to keep your pH measurement in refinery and petrochemical waste water up and running?
Refineries and petrochemical plants need a reliable waste water treatment to keep toxic substances away from the environment. Process condensates, cooling water and even rain water run off contain hydrocarbons, phenols, sulfur components and heavy metals. The pH value needs to be controlled with high accuracy in the various steps of a refinery or petrochemical waste water treatment process. But the accuracy and lifetime of the pH sensor is strongly affected:
- free oil, carbonates and sulfates will form a layer on sensors. This will require regular cleaning and calibration to avoid slow or wrong readings
- sulfur containing components like H2S and mercaptanes, heavy metals and particles spoil the sensor over time
Furthermore, the waste water treatment plant is often located in an explosive zone close to production facilities which will require ex zone certification for all measurement equipment and accessories.
Knick can offer various solutions to keep the pH measurement running, reducing maintenance cost and avoiding high fines for discharge violations:
- automatic rinsing systems with integrated spray nozzles using Stratos transmitters with wash contact and ARD50 or ARD70 fittings for very effective sensor cleaning
- fully automated cleaning and calibration systems using advanced Protos transmitters, Unical pneumatic controller and SensoGate or Ceramat retractable fittings
- all available for safe area, zone 2 and zone 1 ex requirements
