How to keep your passwords safe?

Passwords are so present in our daily lives that we barely notice their impact, and therefore, how important they are for our safety in digital media. When creating a password, it is essential that we follow some rules to make sure that our information is protected. Failure to follow the recommendations below might result in compromising sensitive information about us, and our loved ones. At work, consequences could vary but might result in criminal charges depending on the severity of the leak.

Therefore, to celebrate Change your password day today February 1st we decided to share some tips to create a safe password:

  1. Try to make it have a minimum of 10-12 characters.
  2. Avoid sequences ("12345" "qwerty") because they can be easily hacked in seconds. Also, avoid common words ("password1") for the same reason.
  3. Lowercase, uppercase, symbols, and numbers can be part of your password. Variety can increase how unpredictable your password is.
  4. Passphrases can be more secure when using unexpected words. Even if you're using common words, you can sort them in an odd order and make sure they're unrelated. Both methods can prevent dictionary hacking.
  5. Use something that makes sense to you, but is hard for computers to guess. Even random passwords can be remembered by muscle memory and be semi-readable. But passwords that prevent you from accessing your own account won't help much.
  6. Reusing passwords compromises multiple accounts. Try to use a different one for each account.
