How to Keep Your Emotions "?In Check"? When Selling Your Home

How to Keep Your Emotions "In Check" When Selling Your Home

There’s no doubt that your emotions are attached to your home. From the time you first set eyes on it to the most recent memory you have, your home is a place you’ll never forget; however, you may have come to realize now is the time to move on to somewhere different. Setting your emotions aside to focus on the process of getting your new home can be a challenge.

Here are some tips to make the letting go process a little easier.

1. Understand Your Why

Before deciding to sell your home, sit down and list of why you want to move. Whether you need more space or need access to a better school district, your reasons are important to understand. The impact of your needs is what determines the change you feel called to. If your “whys” are hard to come by, take time and re-evaluate.

2. Be Prepared For the Selling Process

When you’ve made the decision to sell, prepare yourself for the selling process. Putting your house on the market opens it up to feedback from anyone, including buyers and realtors. With inspections comes the reveal of potential flaws that can be a hard pill to swallow. It’s natural to have feelings attached to your home but don’t ignore them. Feel how you feel and remember, this is a business transaction to better your future “whys.” The feedback process for selling your home is not personal.

3. Consider Your Home Like a Product

Although your home is full of memories and has sentimental value to you, potential buyers will be thinking differently. Try your best to put yourself in a buyer’s position and see the house’s bones for what they really are.

Take the time to shine a light on the best features and correct anything that may affect the value, like removing clutter and painting over bright colors with neutral tones. Talk to your realtor about simple investments you can make to increase your home’s value.

4. Be Smart About the Price

You may be tempted to overprice because of your attachment to your home, especially if you’re reluctant to let it go. Do some research and rely on your agent to determine how much your home is worth. You can also request a?property valuation report?from our team.

5. Keep Yourself Involved in the Process

Selling your home is not a “set it and forget it” process. The more you stay involved and in tune, the more you’ll feel in the know and, ultimately, the more satisfied with the outcome you’ll be. Stay in touch with your agent and ask any and all questions. Stay on top of keeping your home clean and tidy for all showings and inspections. Listen to any feedback from potential buyers and realtors and consider them all.

6. Lean On Your Loved Ones for Support

Allow friends and family to support you in the process of moving on. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, call someone for love and guidance. A listening ear can give you perspective and bring you back to your “whys.” Your loved ones will support you by celebrating this new milestone of closing a sale and moving into your new dream home.

7. Put Your Energy Into the Next Chapter

Focus on your future. Most likely, you’re moving on to bigger and better things. Start to visualize yourself in your new home. Enjoy the process of planning your furniture arrangements, decor placement, and how your decor style will fit into the new space. Do whatever planning process you need to make you fall in love with your new home. It may be easier said now, but before you know it, you’ll be emotionally attached to this home like you were to the last one.
