How to keep going whilst interviewing for a job you want?

Interviews can be stressful and for some a bad interview experience can put them off their job hunt. It's important to keep going when job hunting some people get a job offer after a few interviews for others it may take longer. It’s not only important the role is a good fit for you, but you know the organisation is the right fit for you also. So taking the first offer you get, may not be what you want. It can take time, it's important to not let the interview process put you off.

Here I share 4 strategies on what to do if your interview process isn’t quite going to plan.

1. Don’t take it personally – When an interview doesn’t go according to plan and it’s best to not take it personally. Sometimes a bad interview experience can be a blessing in disguise. Think about what you can learn from it and move on from it. The other main reason you shouldn’t take badly is because the employer may be interviewing many candidates and so they must pick the person they feel is the right fit for them etc.

2. Ask for feedback – If you keep on having bad interview experiences or not being offered a role then feedback is essential. If the interviewers or a company don’t give you feedback, ask for it either in an email or a short telephone conversation. Sometimes it may not be you it could be lack of experience qualifications or other factors. However, if it is your interview technique it may be a good idea to refresh these skills so that can improve for next time.

3. Practice makes perfect – This may seem like an obvious one but the more you practice something the better you get at it. Think about all the time you have practiced baking or making something how much you have improved. In the same way interviews and going to as many as you can will help build up your confidence and give you the opportunity to understand what you can do better next time. Therefore, feedback is so important especially if you get nervous or maybe stumble with your words. It also gives you an idea of what the employers want from you.

4. Keep the end in mind. – If you have been job hunting for a while and feel like it’s not going the way you to want, remember your end goal. It may be your interview technique is pretty good and you are always in the last 2 people to be considered. Apart from your experience what can you talk about in an interview that gives you a unique edge. Try thinking about why you are going for the roles you are going for in the first place. You may be competing with others but it's also important you say yes to the right company for you too.
