Practical advice: How job hopping can propel your career

In the days before the internet, globalization and remote work, loyalty to a single company was highly valued in employees. Now, technological advancements have made it easier to network with other professionals, connect with potential employers and research other opportunities. And while you shouldn’t be looking for a new job every few months, there are plenty of positives that come with hopping to a new job.

According to ADP's September 2023 data, staying at your current employer in high-growth industries may earn you an average of 5.9% annual raise. But jumping to another may earn you significantly more, at 9% or higher depending on the opportunity.

And it’s not just pay, either: Working for different companies will develop different professional skills. One of the most important parts of your career is continuing to learn and grow within your industry, and sometimes staying with a single company can limit the knowledge you’re able to acquire. Plus, with a new company, you will be exposed to more diverse projects and clients, which will push you out of your comfort zone and prevent you from getting stuck in one place.

One of the unfortunate realities of having a group of passionate and driven professionals working together is that conflicting ideas and opinions can generate tension in the workplace.?

Being able to resolve conflicts is a valuable asset, and one that is often looked for in leadership. If a disagreement arises in your office, try the following steps:

  1. Shift your thinking into solution mode: This will help settle your emotions and give you clarity into what to do next.
  2. Find common ground: Identify areas of agreement that both parties can work toward.
  3. Listen actively: Let the other person finish and validate what they say before you start talking.
  4. Take a break when necessary: If the conflict escalates into personal attacks or becomes toxic, take the time needed to cool off before trying to resolve everything right away.

These are just four of the eight steps for resolving conflicts that Liesbeth van der Linden outlined in her recent story for Forbes. Make sure to give the whole thing a read!?

I looked like a hopper because of the pandemic. didn't hop but I guess layoff and leaving jobs for the meantime because of family matters in the past also helped in gaining new skills and personal growth. Hell, been stuck on the rut and changed career because I had good opportunities along the way too. Reason why I went back to studies. Funny thing is, I met new people and unexpectedly learned something at a BPO company wherein the ones involved are the clients itself which made me decide to continue training for this side hustle that is currently on break. It still felt like a God's plan. I don't know what my future holds but Maybe God did it for a reason. ?? Oh btw, everything that happened couple years before and after the pandemic felt like God's plan. I wish I could tell everything to the right people but closed doors. As of the moment, there's one thing that I want to get off my chest but not related to it that's why I took a break. It's just that there's a person who seems familiar through connections who went in while I was talking to someone I like. She has a motorcycle. I've been quite angry about it. as a highly observant person, It's hard when you notice small things and i overthink things like there must be a ??

?? Great read. As you move through positions, it's important to document your impact and learnings at each role in a compelling way so you can effectively communicate where your journey is taking you. A powerful visual like this can be a great #jobsearch tool as you plot your next hop. Works great as an informal networking tool, before the interview as a pre-read, a backdrop during the interview, or post interview follow-up attachment to stand out from the other candidates.
