How I’ve Created Financial Freedom For Myself At 29 Years Old

How I’ve Created Financial Freedom For Myself At 29 Years Old

I remember spending the last $200 in my bank account.

After the purchase, I was broke. $0 to my name.

But I had a brand new pair of shoes.

Since that time, I’ve become better with my money.

Here’s how I created financial freedom for myself at 29.

I maintain a simple lifestyle.

I spend a lot less than the average person.

I made multiple six-figures when I had a 9–5 job with a one-person business.

But I didn’t increase my lifestyle.

I still:

  • Drove my 2008 Toyota Yaris that I bought for $4,000 in 2018.
  • Wear worn out shoes that I’ve had since 2014.
  • Drink instant coffee.
  • Eat at home.

My mum also lives in my house.

I looked broke. Unsuccessful. But my bank account looked healthy.

I’ve got friends who make less than six figures but spend like they’ve got more. They always ask why I don’t buy a new car. Get new clothes. Spend on fancy restaurants.

Between a mortgage, they can barely afford repayments for a financed luxury car, and they can never go without a paycheque.

They’ve trapped themselves.

The best financial prisons are the ones we create for ourselves.

That’s when I learned:

  • Want to impress poor people? Outspend them.
  • Want to impress rich people? Outlearn them.

Rich people get wealthy by looking broke.

Poor people stay broke by trying to look rich.

I increase my earning potential.

How? By learning new skills.

I aggressively reinvest in my self-education.

Here are the skills I’ve taught myself:

  • Writing.
  • Persuasion.
  • Content creation.
  • Personal branding.
  • Sales and marketing.

If you can learn these skills, you’ll never go broke.

Any business you start or 9–5 job you work requires these skills. Like finances, skills compound. Acquiring one skill makes the learning the next one easier.

I never worry about making money.

My skill set is too valuable, my audience is big (80k+), and my network is too large. I know I’ll always be able to make money or find a 9–5 job.

Your income level is only limited by your skillset.

I don’t drink, smoke or overeat.

I can’t justify spending money on poison.

Not only does it cost money, but these vices kill my productivity the next day.

What about having fun? I love to have fun.

But I get my fun from:

  • Exercise.
  • Meditation.
  • Being in nature.
  • Reading a good book.

I am also very extroverted. I don’t need alcohol to talk to people. I can be the life of the party while being 100% sober. A lot of people who I party with think I’m drunk.

But I’m not. I’m high on the vibe and life.

You can call me boring. But, like looking broke, I don’t care.

The signs of financial freedom

I recently had $5,000 stolen from my business.

Someone hacked my card details and purchased random things on the internet.

When I found out, I was pissed off.

But after a while, I calmed down.

It’s just money, after all. I called my bank and raised a dispute. There wasn’t much I could do. I actually forgot about it the next day. A week later, the money was back.

I told my family and friends what happened.

Some of them were more anxious than me.

Why? Because if they lost $5,000 they would need to take a loan.

I’m not kidding.

That’s what one of friends who makes six figures told me. He’s monthly bills and spending is so high he never has cash in his bank account. He lives week-to-week.

This is my definition of financial freedom:

When money problems become an inconvenience rather than an existential threat.

I’m living my dream life.

I don’t want a Lambo or a mansion.

My financial freedom looks like this:

  • Learning everyday.
  • Doing work that I love.
  • Travel whenever I want.
  • Control over my daily schedule.

I’m building a one-person business I love while traveling across Southeast Asia.

I get to read and write every day.

I can’t think of anything else that I would want.

Financial freedom is yours to define. Now, go define it.

I’ve previously sold a one-person business and I’m in the process of scaling another one to $20k per month. If you want my one-person business growth system, I’ve created a FREE email course for you to get started.

A real good read, it's simple and achievable. I strongly follow the same practice for freedom. ??

Thanks Michael! Really thoughtful piece. And, incidently, my version of financial freedom is exactly like yours! No need for 'Big and flashy', that only impresses other people - if it even achieves that ... Currently going through your 5 day email course
