How the iPhone 7 is unplugging your headphones for creative inspiration. What do you gain by losing the headphone jack?

How the iPhone 7 is unplugging your headphones for creative inspiration. What do you gain by losing the headphone jack?

NBA rookies know they have to make a name for themselves, so they take a lot of risks to showcase their true potential.

Veterans don’t play that way. Instead, they conserve their energy and their bodies for the long season ahead and do only what is expected of them.

Apple has gotten complacent and decided that it is enough for them to just show up and have an average game. I think we can all agree the iPhone 7 doesn’t have us nearly as excited as we were for the revolutionary iPhone 1st Gen, or even the evolutionary iPhone 6.

New camera? C’mon guys that’s a given in this industry now, not big news.

New colors? Really, that’s a big announcement? This is something they tell me at the Apple Store.

Waterproof? Okay. Now we are getting somewhere. Wait, but it’s not under the standard warranty, the home button doesn’t click anymore, and we have to get rid of our wired-headphones?!

So, they made one nice move that comes with a lot of “undesirable” stipulations. The iPhone 7 is waterproof, but Apple doesn’t sound fully confident in that statement, so you need to buy the extra insurance coverage.

Waterproofing does inadvertently lead to a more creative life, though.

You can no longer get lost in your music all day long because you have to take out those AirPods to recharge.

Music isn’t one of the main pillars to becoming inspired for your next big idea. Nobody gets inspired while listening to Drake whine on the track or Future mumble his way into millions of dollars. Steve Jobs never said that he got inspired to make the iPod while listening to Nirvana.

After interviewing over 200 creative entrepreneurs and artists, we found only 6 people whose ideal creative setting included being secluded by their headphones.

Instead, these creatives described serene environments where they were in tune with the world around them and able to naturally cloud out distractions because the environment offered a feeling which engulfed them in a laser-like focus.

No idea is original. No idea is going to fall into your lap. Ideas live in the wild world around us. And to capture them we are required to be present in the moment.

If you are feeling stuck or uninspired, “accidentally” lose those wireless headphones (which won’t be hard because they are so small), go for walk, play basketball, or spark up a conversation with a stranger in the park.

Come back to reality. You’ll be surprised at the ideas you find there.

While we aren’t creative coaches, we are collaborators. A creative sounding board of sorts that loves to drop our creative insights and speak with other creatives looking to inspire others.

Once a week we send our Quick Theories email which will keep you inspired and ahead of the curve, and we’d love for you to sign up for our newsletter and join the conversation. You can sign up here: https://quicktheories.com

Reality is - I LIKE my music, and I have several very good pair of earbuds that I enjoy using. This breathy and oh-so-hipster commentary about how the world might open up if I lose a pair of substandard sounding AirPods misses the mark. Oh, and because I am practically frugal in my purchases, my older truck does not have Bluetooth, so there goes music on my commute. Hmmmm... I think not.
