How IoT is ‘Reshaping’ the Future of Automotive Industry?

Lately but surely, people have started to recognize that the Internet of Things (IoT) is not a rocket science technology, which is hard to understand. The amount of noise it has made in the recent times has attracted the eyes of almost every industry in the global market. The scope for virtually endless possibilities and ability to connect with multiple number of devices has driven the industries to adopt this bleeding edge technology into their businesses.

As of today, numerous industries have adopted IoT, which has enabled them to function beyond their regular capability levels of business productivity. When talking about one specific industry that has undergone revolutionary changes with IoT is ‘Automotive industry’.

Vehicles used for only transportation purposes has now become an old saying. With the advent of IoT momentum, cars have gained the ability to get connected with one another over the Internet. With each part of the car being connected to the Internet, you’ll get the possibility to remotely access and control your vehicle from anyplace and anywhere in the world.

Sounds interesting, isn’t it? There is much more to go. How it feels when a car drives on its own and take you to the destination without any human intervention? Obviously, it will be a rocking experience for anyone. This is the science-fiction futurama* that is going to be the reality - a myth turned alive because of the combined efforts of the big market players like Ford, Mercedes, and Tesla.

According to a recent market report by IBM, around 200+ million cars are already having the Internet-enabled connectivity feature in some way or another, which is further estimated to grow double by the year 2020.

Conclusion

It cannot be denied that IoT is making the future bigger and brighter. With the inbuilt features like vehicle tracking, performance monitoring, remote diagnostics, etc. are completely changing the way the transportation system works. Though IoT is revolutionary in terms of mobility and remote accessibility, one should not overlook the adverse effects it will bring on-board such as privacy & security to the users.

*a preview of something that is not yet a reality.

The big road block for IoT will be the antiquated ERPs that will not be capable of coping with the volume of connected assets and the need to recycle information in near real time. Might be a good thing as the ERP is a mill stone that urgently needs to replaced. IoT could be the driver for this. RFID gave them a fright but IoT is of a different order of change.
