How IOT Devices are Changing The Data-Driven Data Center

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a huge driver of contemporary technological advances. IoT devices, of course, are common household or personal products that, when connected to the Internet, can be controlled using smartphones or tablets. While you likely wouldn’t be surprised that the IoT is changing the way people think about common items, you might be more surprised about the way the IoT is changing the data center. Here, we’ll talk about three ways the continued popularity of IoT devices has and will continue to change the data center.

The IoT will influence how data is transmitted.

IoT devices will generate two types of data: consumer-driven data and enterprise-driven data. As consumers continue to use apps and the IoT devices record information about the user, more and more data will be generated. To manage this influx of data, data centers will have to change the kinds of WAN links they likely already have. The bandwidth requirements supported by these links are generally strong enough for moderate bandwidth, but will not support the large amounts of small message sensor data that IoT devices use.

The IoT will require data centers to move away from centralized applications.

Because data generated from the IoT is globally distributed, it won’t be possible to transmit that data to be processed at a single data center. That means that centralized applications — which are, unfortunately, also good for cutting costs and increasing security — will no longer be viable in the IoT age. Instead, data centers will need to aggregate data into mini data centers for initial processing, and then, if necessary, forward data to a centralized data center for more processing.

IoT will force data centers to adopt Edge Computing.

The goal of Edge Computing is to push data, computing, and applications to the edge of the network — and away from the cloud. This kind of cloud-based infrastructure that can communicate with many data centers will function particularly well with the large number of IoT devices that will come into use. Edge Computing is a logical concept because it decreases the volume and distance required of data to move. Further, this kind of computing makes it easier for data centers to provide analytics to drive computing.

If you’re preparing for the new data center requirements needed to support IoT devices, Silverback Data Center Solution’s Managed Data Center ensures that you have the most up-to-date technologies available. From structured cabling to third-party vendor escort, our Managed Plans mean we’ll keep up with the newest technologies for you.
