How Involved Do You Want To Be?

For more than 20 years, I have offered Inventors and R&D teams three levels of service to get their innovations to market. Each varies on the amount of participation and that of course reflects their cost.

Yesterday, I had a client ring me to ask about the different services that I offer and to see if I did more than just teach or coach. During this conversation, I explained my 3-tier services that meet the requirements for most inventors and R&D teams. He wasn't quite understanding how this all worked until I sent him a chart of the three tiers.

I mostly focus on the second tier because the service is affordable and has a guarantee associated with it. For those that want to save money, the lower tier will deliver that service and also can be used as a sensible stepping stone for the second tier.

But I rarely offer the top tier to anyone other than the larger corporate clients. However, as this client pointed out, this option best suited his services for reasons other than his lack of time or need to expedite the outcomes. He just didn't want to stop his current business to focus on something else.

For me - mostly driven by clients who have lost most of their savings on patents and prototypes before they get to me, I tend not to offer this top tier to anyone but the major corporate clients. This may be a disservice to clients who just don't want to commercialize their innovation themselves.

This article is to help every inventor understand how I (and other commercialization specialists) can help them achieve their commercial outcomes in the time they want, by choosing different levels of engagement.

The bottom tier of the services offered is the "Done-By-You" service, where we provide a 6-week self-paced learning course and support the inventor with weekly group coaching calls to help them understand all of the lessons and then articulate these to their innovations.

This is a fixed-cost engagement that teaches the process and provides examples, templates, checklists, and quizzes to embed the learning, and at the same time allows the inventor to take their time.

The middle tier is the "Done-With-You" which is a coaching service where we work with the inventors to move their projects from where they are stuck, to where they are earning income from their innovation. This is typically a 6-month engagement and includes all of the services of the tier-1 service.

At the top of the three tiers of service is a "Done-For-You" Package where we scope the project with the inventor and then commercialize their innovation for them. This works well for those who are short of time or don't want the risks associated with learning how this is done.
