Tip #1 – Take The Initiative
Good things come to those who wait. That’s true.
But the BEST things comes to those who take action. And lots of it.
If you’re hesitant to introduce yourself, don’t be surprised when others are hesitant to introduce themselves.
When you take initiative, you automatically establish yourself as a leader in the conversation. You’re indicating an interest in the other person, which will help facilitate conversation and put the other person at ease.
Plus, you build momentum in introducing yourself to MORE people and developing connections with EVERYONE at EVERY event you attend in the future.
If you’re shy or introverted, you can and SHOULD still take initiative. Even if you’re a more reserved person, you’ll eventually be pulled into a conversation at any event. Instead of letting others decide which conversation you’re otherwise stuck with, I urge you to take lead, and take the initiative, to engage others and therefore have more control over whom you interact with (and for how long, since it’s easier to leave a conversation that YOU started than it is to end one that somebody else locked you into).
Tip #2 – Be Genuinely Interested In Other People
With the first tip, I mentioned that taking initiative indicates an interest in the other person, and will help you relate better to one another during conversation.
This is entirely true.
However, if you stop showing interest in the other person right after the conversation starts, you would have been better off not introducing yourself in the first place.
Once you start talking with someone, be interested in that person! Ask about that person’s life, what that person enjoys, and what that person is looking to gain from whatever conference or event you’re attending.
Not only will you relate more effectively and develop a genuine connection for professional or personal gain, but you’ll also learn something! And, you’ll have a surefire way of keeping a conversation going AFTER you introduce yourself.
People are great at talking about themselves – when you’re genuinely interested in another person, and ask a couple of questions, you’ll have conversations that flow naturally.
Plus, you’ll make a great impression because you’ll be viewed as personable, friendly, and astute. The more questions you ask, the more contextual information you can use to drive the conversation and add value to the other person.
Tip #3 – Assume That Everyone Likes You
If you need a little more push to confidently introduce yourself, I want you to assume that everyone likes you.
Not just for your ego or your nerves.

More importantly, because it’s true.
Psychological Science recently published an intriguing piece of research, concluding that people frequently underestimate how much people like them after the initial encounter.
So stop worrying! Nobody’s perfect, and there’s no reason for you to put on a fa?ade when conversing with others. The other person you’re talking to is just as human as you.
And as long as you’re genuine and authentic, you’ll bring your best self to the introduction and following conversation.
There Is No Pressure On You
Plus, if you need another push to introduce yourself, remember that the other person you’re talking to is probably wrapped up in his or her own head. The other person is not judging you, and probably appreciates the conversation just to escape his/her thoughts. Nobody else at a conference or social event is staring you down, and they’re all probably occupied with their existing conversations or business interests. There is no pressure on you to perform or to do anything for that matter – just go out there, have fun, and adopt the mindset that others DO like you … because they actually do!
