How to Interview Software Testers
Ministry of Testing
Ministry of Testing is where software testing professionals grow their careers.
Are you struggling to find the right software testing talent for your team? Conducting effective interviews that give you the insights you need to make informed hiring decisions is key to finding the best talent. Here are three steps you can take to ensure that you are evaluating candidates' skills and abilities in a comprehensive way.
1. Map the Skills of a Tester
Firstly, it's important to map out all the skills required of a software tester in your team. Technical expertise is a must, but testers must also have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with team members.
2. Structure Your Interview for Illuminating Conversations
When structuring your interview, aim to create a conversational atmosphere that allows for a two-way exchange of information. This will give you a better sense of the candidate's thought process and communication style. Behavioural questions that ask candidates to describe how they have handled specific testing situations in the past can provide valuable insights into their knowledge, skills and experience.
3. Set Enlightening Challenges
Finally, setting challenges that require candidates to problem-solve and think creatively can help you assess their ability to handle real-life testing scenarios. This could involve asking them to identify and fix bugs in a codebase or providing solutions to hypothetical testing situations.
