Dear international student,
It takes A LOT of courage to fly across the world to pursue your dreams.
It’s not easy to be far away from your loved ones.
Or the comfort of your home.
It can be a struggle to fit into a new country and culture.
And it can be daunting to deal with all that pressure…
The pressure to secure a job in your field.
Whilst time is ticking away…
And it’s all made worse by the seemingly never-ending rejection emails.
But here's the truth:?
Landing a job in your field is not only possible.
It’s highly achievable.
Especially with the right processes in place.
We’ve helped 100s of clients land jobs in their fields.
And many of these are international students.
Today, I want to share 3 job search tips that are proven to help.
Tip 1. Sell Your International Experience
Many students who come to Australia do not sell their overseas experience.?
Many treat it as if it's not valuable.?
They're scared to talk about it in interviews.?
They're scared to even put it on their resume.?
They feel that local employers will prioritise candidates with local experience.?
And while there's a grain of truth to this, I don’t think it’s the right approach.?
In fact, our MOST successful clients are proud of their international experience.?
Instead, they consider it a valuable asset that sets them apart.
They carefully outline the achievements and skills they’ve earned during this time.
And they treat their international (and often global) experience as an advantage.
So, don’t undersell yourself!
Be proud of your overseas experience.
Tip 2. Build a Resume That Resonates
Picture this: You wouldn't communicate with someone in Brazil the same way you would with an Australian, right??
The same holds true for your resume.?
Our most successful clients translate their experiences into a language and style that local employers understand and appreciate.
They ensure that every skill, achievement, and experience they present aligns with what employers seek.?
When your resume resonates with the local market, it's not just understood – it's embraced.?
And that's where the magic happens – more interviews, more conversations, and more job offers.
Tip 3. Network!
Last time we ran the numbers, around half of our clients secured job offers without resorting to traditional online applications!
As you probably already know, a significant chunk of job opportunities in Australia arise from relationships, connections, and tapping into the networks you build.?
As the old saying goes, “It's not what you know, it's WHO you know.”?
This really holds true in Australia.
I won't sugarcoat it – networking can be uncomfortable at first..?
But it's 100% possible for international students to network and build relationships.
It takes a bit of time, effort and courage to do this.?
But it’s definitely worth it once you see the results.?
If you can, especially while you're still studying, start to build relationships with people who work at the companies you like.
These connections, nurtured with care, can evolve into priceless assets when you get to the point where you’re looking for work.?
These relationships will set you apart from the 1,000s of other graduates out there.
The other massive benefit of networking is that you will will often receive advice on how to break into that specific company, and what they're looking for.
We hope these tips helped you on your job search journey!
