How to be intentional with transparency

How to be intentional with transparency

We’re often told that transparency –sharing lots of information – is THE magical cure to all our trust problems. That more transparency equals more trust. But does it?!

As some of you readers might know, the relationship between trust and transparency is one of my favourite Rethink topics! That’s why this week we’re rethinking how transparency can be used as a tool to earn trust with clients, customers, or colleagues if used intentionally and with care.

Read the Rethinking Transparency newsletter edition here.

Well said. Being transparent is not a magic solution that improves your organisation's culture. Building employee engagement and trust takes time, through being authentic and intentional.

I find the relationship between transparency, trust, and distrust is an important one to unpack. I often use the illustration below to think of trust, distrust, and transparency. We need enough transparency to demonstrate trustworthiness, but not so much radical transparency that trust becomes irrelevant or encourages distrust. Understanding these dynamics allows us to see how judicious transparency sustains trust, while excessive or inadequate transparency undermines it. The illustration helps visualize how to balance transparency for optimal trust in relationships and organizations.
