How To Install A Fascia Mount Deck Railing: A Step-By-Step Guide
Fascia mounts allow deck railings to be attached to the deck’s edges rather than the deck’s floor. Fascia mount deck railings are used for a variety of reasons and should be taken into account when deciding how to build your deck. Fascia mounts may be required by your local building code in some areas. In humid or wet climates, they are both recommended and often required. Excess water will collect on decks without drainage systems, and mounting your deck railing to the floor can cause rotting.

The Practical Advantages of Fascia Mounting
Fascia Mounting is a mounting technique that allows railings to be attached to the face or side of a surface rather than the floor. Because the hardware is attached to the side of decks or stairs, you have more walking space with this installation method. Due to tight conditions or a difficult mounting substrate, this design may even be required in some areas.
Aesthetic Improvements
More open space means more surface area. Fascia mounting creates the illusion of a larger space while maintaining a minimal “all glass” appearance. Tempered glass panels contribute to the openness by making natural light and clear views the focal point. When standing on the deck, the hardware of certain systems, such as the Standoff Glass Railing or Fascia Clamp Glass Railing, is completely hidden from view. This provides you with a nearly invisible guardrail as well as a clear panoramic view.

Fascia Mount VS Top mounted railings
There are two ways to mount your deck railings. You can top mount your posts directly to the deck floor or use fascia mounts.

Here’s our checklist to help you decide. Are fascia mounts the best choice for your next railing project?
1. I Live In A Humid Or Wet environment
Mold and rot are particularly concerning in areas with humid or wet climates.
Aluminum railings are a weather-resistant railing material that is suitable for a wide range of climates. Many decks use a waterproof membrane to protect them from natural elements such as excessive water. Choosing fascia mount railings over top mounted railings ensures that the railing posts do not puncture the waterproof membrane of the deck.
In fact, fascia deck mounts rather than top mounts are required by building codes in some jurisdictions. Check your local building codes to see if fascia mounts are required in your area.
If you live in a wet or humid climate, consider using fascia mounts to keep mold and rot at bay.
2. I Want Visual Appeal
A top-mounted post’s hardware is visible from all angles, whereas a side-mounted post’s hardware is hidden.
Because they conceal the deck hardware along the side, fascia mounts have a cleaner appearance. You can enjoy the view from your deck without seeing the mounting bolts if you use fascia mounts.
3. I Have A Compact Deck
Fascia mounts allow you to use every inch of your deck floor by securing the railings to the side of the deck. The deck railings take up no floor space. If your railing project includes a deck with a smaller surface area, consider using Fascia mounts.
4.?I Want Simple Cleaning

5. I Want a Simple Installation
Railing post installation on the side of a structure is more difficult than mounting the posts on the top. For the railing post to be straight, the fascia bracket must be level with the deck floor when installing side mounts.
Our Fascia Mount Installation Guide walks you through the simple step-by-step process of installing these mounts, which is slightly longer than installing top-mounted railings. Consider top mounted railings for your deck build if you want a less complicated installation.
6. I Have An Overhanging Deck
Fascia mounts may not be suitable for decks with an overhang or rain gutter. Fascia mounts must be installed in a secure area along the side of your deck. Overhangs and rain gutters can make it difficult to secure fascia mounts along the deck’s edge.

Prepping the Area
Before you start installing your fascia mount deck railing, you’ll want to make sure the area is prepped. Be sure to remove any debris, such as leaves and cobwebs, from the area where you plan to install the rails.
This will make the job go smoother and will prevent you from getting hurt. You’ll also want to remove any old rails that you may have currently. If you plan to paint your deck, now would be a good time to do that as well.
Attaching the Fascia Mounts
The first step in installing your fascia mount deck railings is attaching the mounts. The mounts will help to secure the deck railings to your deck’s fascia boards.
You can purchase these mounts or make your own. To make your own, you’ll first want to measure the distance from the top of your deck’s fascia boards to the bottom of the deck joists. You’ll then want to mark the location of the mount on the bottom of the deck’s fascia boards.
The mount should be placed 8” to 10” away from the end of the board. Next, you’ll want to mark the location of the mount on the top of the deck joist on the inside of the deck.
The mount should be placed 16” away from the end of the deck joist. You can use a brad nailer to add the mounts to the fascia boards and deck joists.

Measuring and Cutting the Railings
Now that the mounts are attached and you’ve measured and cut your deck rails, it’s time to install the rails.
You’ll first want to paint the ends of the rails if needed, so they match the color of your deck. Once they’re dry, you can mark the location of where the rails will be installed. To mark the locations, use the measurement from the top of your deck joists to the top of the bottom rail. Next, use a level to make sure the marks are even.
Once they are, you can use a drill to make pilot holes at the marks. You can also use a brad nailer to pound the rails into place.
Installing the Railing Posts
Now that the rails are installed, it’s time to install the railing posts. You’ll first want to mark the location of the posts on the railings.
To mark the posts, use the measurement from the bottom of the bottom rail to the top of the top rail. Once you’ve marked the posts, use a level to make sure the posts are even.
Next, use a drill to make pilot holes at the marks on the railings. You can also use a brad nailer to pound the posts into place. Be sure to use a level to make sure they’re straight.
Attaching the Railing Post Caps
Now that the posts are installed, it’s time to install the railing post caps. To do this, you’ll first want to mark the location of the caps on the posts.
To mark the caps, use the measurement from the bottom of the bottom rail to the top of the top rail. Next, use a level to make sure the posts are even. You’ll want the post caps to sit just below the top of the railings.
Next, use a drill to make pilot holes at the marks. You can also use a brad nailer to pound the caps into place. Be sure to use a level to make sure they’re straight.

Finishing Touches
Now that the railings are installed, there are a few finishing touches you can do to make your deck railing look finished. First, you can caulk the seams where the posts and railings meet.
This will prevent leaks and water from getting inside your deck. Next, you can stain the railings to give them an extra level of protection and a beautiful finish. Finally, you can add some landscaping lights to your deck railing to make it even more beautiful at night!
Now that your fascia mount deck railing is installed, sit back, relax, and enjoy your beautiful new deck railing! These are a few simple tips to make the process go a bit smoother and make your deck railing installation look even better.
