One of the most important steps of installing artificial turf is the preparation of the base. The base must be compacted very well, assuring that it is even and smooth all the way. In preparing the base, necessary steps such as excavation and filling must be executed. In excavating the area, three to four inches of dirt or sod must be eliminated to make way for the base filling composed of either decomposed granite or road base class II. The surface must be very even and smooth as possible.
To be able to prevent weeds from growing from the artificial lawn, it is required to place a fabric weed barrier under the artificial turf. The materials that are effective in securing weed barrier are nails (also known as artificial grass spikes or sod pins) or landscapes staple wires. The artificial grass is stored in the factory or warehouse in rolls, and because of this, the fake grass must be unrolled at least three hours before using it. Being exposed to air and wind, as well as laying it flat on the floor, helps the artificial grass to be more flexible and easier to install.

When all steps are finished, final touches may be employed such as the use of power broom to make the blades stand up, resulting to a more natural-looking grass.
