How Insomnia Can Help You Sell More ??
Is “insomnia” a real thing or a word that was made up to try and sell something?
I know. This sounds like a conspiracy theory, but just hang with me for a moment.
Are you married? If not, you know someone who is, right? Well, what if I told you that in the late 1930s, De Beers hired an ad agency to help them sell more diamonds.
And what happened next created probably the greatest ROI of all time...
Persuade people that they MUST buy a diamond engagement ring when deciding to get married because love or whatever. The rest is history.
Anyways, back to insomnia.
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and some people have serious neurological disorders that cause their brains to behave differently.
That said, for many people, insomnia is not something that needs to be treated with prescription drugs.
It’s really quite simple…
- Don’t consume crazy amounts of caffeine or any caffeine after 5 PM
- Get in a hard workout earlier in the day or at least 30-60 minutes of physical activity every day
- Use your bedroom for only sleep or sex (i.e. stop checking your damn phone)
- Don’t eat like crap all the time
- Take up a mindfulness exercise like meditation
- Wake up super early
“Alright Mike, I see what you're saying and all, but what the heck does this have to do with selling more stuff?”
Have A Unique Angle (Big Idea)
Let’s imagine the average person goes to the doctor and complains they have a hard time sleeping. The doctor does some tests, asks some questions, and replies “Yes Bob, it appears you are having trouble sleeping.” K thx bro.
But, change that sentence ever-so-slightly, and it completely transforms the emotional pull: “Yes Bob, it appears you are suffering from insomnia.”
Oh snap. That sounds pretty serious. I don't want that.
Reduce The Resistance
Despite knowing all the things above about being able to sleep better at night, a lot of people still choose to take a sleeping pill (9 million Americans according to a CDC report from back in 2013).
Why? There’s little resistance. I take a single pill, and I sleep (getting desired result).
Pain + Values + Relevant Offer = Winning Combo
The reason why most copy fails to get people to take action is because it’s not doing a great job of communicating the ideal person’s values back to them, and relating the pain it is they are experiencing.
Again, you must be reducing the resistance.
In the case of the person with insomnia, their major source of pain is not being able to sleep. By not being able to sleep, they feel tired and sluggish all day. Their work is suffering and so is the little bit of time they have to spend with their family and friends.
They value feeling rested and having energy to take on the day. They want to feel good and be able to do more things with the people they care about without constantly feeling like they need to take a nap.
Enter, the solution.
Here’s a simple formula you can follow the next time you write copy:
Are you struggling with [major source of pain]?
Do you want [things they value]?
Then, I’m going to share with you [complimentary offer]
