How the industry is innovating and transforming how healthcare works

If you’re like me, you came away from HIMSS23 energized and feeling more optimistic about the progress our industry is making and the direction we’re headed. Throughout the sessions and conversations, I kept hearing the word “innovation” over and over, in reference to technologies like AI, ML, and ChatGPT. As is the case with most truly innovative ideas, they build upon one another and will find their place to make the optimal impact, allowing for exponential innovation and creativity that advances the entire industry forward. And that’s what I think we’re seeing now in healthcare.

Another topic that continued to have top billing was the patient experience and how we’re falling short of meeting the patient’s definition of and expectations for a high-quality experience. We are realizing a patient’s experience isn’t confined to the medical care they receive or the food service. It’s about their entire experience from scheduling through paying their bill. A key contributor to a patient’s less-than-exceptional experience results from our pre-existing, fractured non-interoperable infrastructure.

This year, the interoperability conversations began to extend beyond meeting the latest regulatory mandate and transaction standards. But instead, a deeper, more thoughtful discussions have emerged around enabling compliant, permissioned data fluidity as the fuel to accelerate efforts like health equity forward. Secure, compliant peer-to-peer data and asset exchange is Avaneer Heath’s reason for being. We are reinventing the business of healthcare for better collaboration, seamless permissioned and real-time information exchange and transactions, lowering costs, and improving experiences.

Finally, as I have the opportunity, once again, to be in-person with people from all types of organizations with a range of roles, I recognize how special and valuable these types of events are to me as a professional and to our caring healthcare profession. Coming together with all of you and the organizations you represent, with the shared goal of improving people’s lives and their health is truly an honor. I left HIMSS 2023 with energy and a renewed sense of hope that we can and will transform U.S. healthcare to be the best in the world.

Interconnectivity, Interoperability, and Reliability Centered Maintenance

Becker’s Healthcare Podcast

Becker’s recently caught up with Mark Treshock, Executive Director of Emerging Technology at CVS Health, to talk about a new federated model of data ownership and data exchange that allows payers and providers to share data without worrying about formatting, errors, and data control. In the podcast, Treshock describes how CVS Health Minute Clinics uses this model to send claims to Aetna and receive back a patient’s final responsibility in a matter of seconds. This allows Minute Clinics to tell patients with 100% certainty what they owe while they’re still at the clinic. And this is just the first of many use cases to come. It’s a genuine game changer that’s now available to any payer or provider who’s interested.
