This week, we explore how LinkedIn’s Top Startups in India this year are leveraging AI — from communicating with their customers to building better products.
Artificial intelligence is becoming a part of day-to-day work and strategy across businesses in India, and the AI adoption trend is also igniting new Generative AI-based software-as-a-service startups, with their number more than doubling in India since 2021.
LinkedIn’s Top Startups in India 2023 — including Zepto, BluSmart, GrowthSchool, StockGro, and Pocket FM — are no stranger to this trend. Even though these startups operate across a variety of sectors, they’re all embracing the use of AI across a few major pillars, including building better products, enhancing customer experience, and boosting productivity.
?? Building better products
Tech is the backbone of the operations and customer experience at quick commerce startup Zepto, says Roma Bindroo , CHRO. The country’s first unicorn of 2023 is utilising AI across functions — from efficient demand planning to ensure customers find what they’re looking to making the right brand and product recommendations for customers.
Tech–driven e-commerce has a big role to play in India’s economic growth, and companies are investing in AI, machine learning, and other technologies to leverage the e-commerce boom in India, states a Times Now report.?
Skyroot Aerospace, which specialises in futuristic space-launch vehicle design and building, has started using AI and ML in some aspects of design and simulation, for analysing market trends, predicting future demand for launches, and for weather analysis, says Dr. C. V. S. Kiran, Director of R&D and Strategy. Social investment platform StockGro, too, plans to embed AI functionalities in their products, offering features such as predictive maintenance, intelligent recommendations, and automated troubleshooting, says Ajay Lakhotia, Founder and CEO at StockGro.
?? Sparking?great listening experiences
?AI has made its debut in the media and entertainment sector, influencing the process of filmmaking and music creation, and hyper-personalisation of customer experiences. Conversational AI is gaining significance even in audio consumer tech products. At audio series platform Pocket FM, AI is about “building great user experiences, system automation, and eliminating manual and redundant processes,” says Rohan Nayak , CEO and Co-founder at Pocket FM. He adds that the company’s focus is to ensure the listeners have the best listening experience with the most relevant content, quality audio standards, and undisrupted audio streaming experiences.
?? Enriching customer interactions
At app-based on demand ride hailing company BluSmart, the foundation is built on tech and AI to meet customer demand, and provide an equally impressive experience to driver partners, says Kamaljeet Kaur , Chief People Officer. The firm is working on two applications of AI — a GitHub copilot for their developers which is expected to speed up their feature development by at least 30%, and generative AI to manage interactions between customers and customer support, drivers, and customers, as well as between drivers and the operations team.?
Meanwhile, at insurtech startup Ditto Insurance, AI is utilised to support advisors' day-to-day activities and conversations, but the platform maintains the human touch in its customer-facing operations due to the sensitive nature of insurance-related information, says Sameer Prakash , VP, Business Initiatives.

?? Helping students and professionals learn better
From introducing AI-powered teaching assistants to enhancing sales and marketing efforts — edtech companies in India are betting on AI across functions. GrowthSchool, one of this year’s LinkedIn Top Startups in India, is also keen on embedding AI? into the learning journey and is actively exploring the development of AI-based products, says Vaibhav Sisinty , Founder and CEO.
The company also integrated no-code AI and ChatGPT in its programmes with the aim to provide learners an advantage in a fast-changing digital environment, reports Financial Express.
?? Giving productivity an AI boost
B2B travel platform TravClan’s employees are encouraged to use AI tools to write quirky copies, plan, write formulas, and find nifty shortcuts and hacks, says Co-founder Arun Bagaria. Edtech firm GrowthSchool, too, has integrated AI into their operations and strategy. The company is driving innovation and doubling their efficiency — and at the heart of this transformation is the use of text and image generation tools, and automation tools like Zapier, says Vaibhav Sisinty , Founder and CEO.
The firm’s design and content teams use ChatGPT for immediate feedback, generating creative ideas, refining writings, and simulating user interactions, while the product team leverages ChatGPT for emulating user feedback sessions, brainstorming, and drafting requirement documents interactively.?

According to LinkedIn data, 75% of professionals are seeing their companies introduce guidelines or training plans for integrating AI into their day-to-day work, and 44% of professionals are most excited about how AI will help them be more productive, make them more efficient,? and quicken their access to knowledge.?
“AI has been instrumental in streamlining our operations,” says Ajay Lakhotia , Founder and CEO at StockGro. He adds that the technology has allowed their team to accomplish more tasks in less time, where a task that previously consumed two hours of manual effort can now be completed in just 15 minutes with the assistance of AI-based automation — representing an 87.5% increase in productivity.
?? Bolstering defence mechanisms
“We employ AI-driven defence mechanisms across our network infrastructure, including DNS and network layers. These systems use ML to identify and flag potential threats, minimising false alarms and highlighting suspicious activities, thus enhancing our cybersecurity, says Ajay Lakhotia , Founder and CEO at StockGro.
India’s security and risk management spending is expected to spike 13.6% over 2023 to $3 billion in 2024, according to a Gartner report. Amid growing cyber attacks, AI models can help companies strengthen defences through malware and anomaly detection, improved threat intelligence, and intelligent automation, Director and Chief Architect at Kyndryl Pradeep Rao writes in an article, sharing the pros and cons of AI tools in cybersecurity.

“Prompt Engineering is the art and science of crafting carefully tailored input instructions or prompts to guide AI models in generating desired outputs.
