How to Increase your Sales and Build Business Development Motivation

Business Development, one of the hardest and also most exciting jobs ever. One day results can be amazing, another day they are devastating. So how do you stay motivated?

Some top tips for staying motivated when you are a career Business Development Professional:

  1. Self talk is incredibly powerful. When that little voice in your head tells you that you can’t, banish it and tell it YOU CAN! When your inner voice is saying “today is terrible. I cannot do it” this creates a negative feedback loop in your mind. Instead say “I can do this, I will succeed”. Keep repeating this. Even if you may not believe this to start, keep thinking about the words and imagine a positive future with your next sale hitting the board! This will create a POSITIVE feedback loop and help your frame of mind!
  2. Focus on smaller wins. Even a connection, a response to an email, or an arrangement for a meeting. Think about POSSIBILITIES arising from these small wins. Think about what COULD happen from these actions.
  3. Think about what you want to achieve in the long term and what you are learning from your role when things are not happening. Is there anything you can do differently? What works? What does not work? How can you change to increase your productivity? What resources and who do you have around to help you? 
  4. Use the Pomodoro Technique for business development. Research has shown that repetition of this technique increases FOCUS and PRODUCTIVITY
  • Set a timer for 25 mins and hit those phones or LinkedIn
  • After 25 mins take a break for 3 mins
  • Set your timer again for 25 mins and repeat x 4
  • Have a break for 10 mins after this.
