Leader: “Their CV kills. This is the reason I hired them. they are rockstars and I see a huge potential in them… And I can’t believe I have to micromanage them”.
?Me: “What percentage of your time does it take to micromanage them?”
?Leader: “Mhhhh… 50%?!?... I know, it sucks. they are distracted. They slow everything down. Team performance is not where it should be, but I can’t find someone else right now. We are almost at the end of Q2… The team doesn't perform well... Now what?”. **
Performance can be a shiny object
Performance as a whole might be a shiny object, a distraction that keeps you from getting closer to the truth when evaluating your team members. Especially if you think that's just a matter of hard skills, CV, and previous experience, you could be far off the mark.
The majority of leaders, including myself, began their leadership journey with the belief that hard skills + hard work equals performance. That was before I discovered a very simple equation, which laid the foundation of every work I have done with CEOs and entrepreneurs over the past decade.?
As a matter of fact, rather than adding up, subtracting represents the true currency of performance.?When you know and apply that simple truth, you'll be on the fast track toward becoming a more engaging and impactful leader.
The words potential and performance are frequently used interchangeably, even though there is an important difference between them.?The potential an employee has for future success is predicted by all their capacities and talents, actualized and latent, whereas performance is determined by the results they are consistently able to achieve in their current capacity.
Here is the truth…
In this case, it's all about the Performance Equation:
Tim Gallwey - one of the greatest coaches of all time who is also considered the grandfather of modern coaching - coined the above simple equation about how to increase individual and team performance. This expression helps us to understand how to shift our mindset so that we can apply the following statement in our everyday lives:?Performance equals potential minus interference.?
Let's take a closer look at interference to find an actionable way to overcome it, and since performance or potential is related to human behavior, this kind of interference is also behavioral. Destructive behavioral interference is anything that:
??Interferes, gets in the way, obstacles, stops, prevents you or an employee from accessing their full potential,
??Hinders you or your team from expressing their unique and full physical, mental, and emotional capacities,
??Undermines you or an employee to be successful and fulfilled.

… And here are some solutions
Global studies and research show that interference can be due to external factors, such as the physical work environment, the company culture, the season of the year, and time of the day, as well as internal factors, such as conscious and/or subconscious beliefs and physical, mental, and emotional responses.
Each one of the above or a combination of them can prevent you, a team member, or your entire team from accessing the most appropriate resources, functioning at their highest level, and achieving the best results that contribute the most to the expansion of the business.
Behavioral interference may also be self-induced or acquired randomly; can be obvious and evident, as well as unsuspected, hidden, or counter-intuitive, and its degree is directly impacted by our level of resilience.
Just to mention a few, the most common damaging interfering elements could be:
Performance can be improved most effectively, profitably, and sustainably when interference, resistance, and obstacles are transformed into neutral energy, which can then be nudged toward your desired outcomes.
When you want to increase performance, hard work and hard skills could be an unrelatable and misleading duo. If you run as fast as you can against a wall in the hopes of crushing it with your bare hands, you might be unable to pass through it. There are times when you need to open up to new possibilities, such as finding a way to walk around the wall, using a ladder to climb over it, or asking for help from someone who knows how to deal with it effortlessly.
