How to Increase Project Profits?
I feel I can safely say without any recrimination that we all want to make more money. I am going to try my best not to use any abbreviated words, letters etc.
I am a firm believer that no matter what size of a company you are, and no matter what end of the construction Industry that you work in, we all just want to keep things SIMPLE!!!
So listed below is what the Industry is trying to do, whether it be a small or large Project, being more efficient is everyone’s priority.
- Pre Agree Clients Requirements. Have a well-structured execution plan.
- Visualised all works in a 3D model.
- Identify all Clashes between all Disciplines.
- Share all documents with all Team Managers both internal and external.
- Create a Standard Filing Structure which all contractors will understand and everyone will be able to access information relevant to them.
- Create on approval process between all Contractors and Clients.
- Pre-agreed datadrops and levels of detail within these datadrops.
- Create an audit Trail that can be stored securely and cost efficiently for many years.
N.B. Before everyone comes back to me this is not a definitive list.
Now looking forward into the future how will the Construction Sector increase their PROFITS!!!
How Extra Costs Occur
- Create a standard communication process with full traceability and one that cannot be deleted. All companies need to protect themselves from human error. (Email / Dropbox / telephones etc etc cannot provide this structured and undeleteable processes)
- Reduce the number of issues / snags / changes that are needed either from poor design or poor project definition.
- Reduces the number of snags due to poor communication of drawing / document changes.
New versions of all drawings and key documents need to be simply shared with the correct people.
- Our best staff are always stretched but with the use of key applications (Like Sherlayer) they can cover more projects remotely and save the company huge amounts of time.
Save Money
- Invest in your best people and once again let technology to do more for your key staff.
- Better planning will allow your company to work like a well-oiled machine.
- Create an Undeletable Audit Trail of all files / tasks / communications etc., take some of the risk out of your business with full traceability. Argue you case with strong technology backing you up.
All of this is achievable through BIM oh sorry!! Building Information Model.
The time is here where you need to look to the future and make your first step.
The larger organisations have already invested and continue to invest, they expect everyone working with them to be ready.
Are you ready for the New challenge, have you the technology and trained staff in place?
I find a lot of companies talk the talk but have not committed their companies to these future changes?
A lot of companies find these changes difficult and confusing.
There are more and more case studies that actually show making these changes do save and in some cases by ￡100,000’s.
Don’t wait for your next PAS 1192-2 2013 mandated project as it will be too late, it is very hard to change at the last minute!!!!
Finally remember this not a Project change this is a Company Change!!!!
