How to Increase Productivity at Work
The relationship between hours worked and productivity has interested economists for many years, but a new paper by John Pencavel of Stanford University, based on a set of data compiled during the First World War, may have the answers they have been searching for.
Pencavel’s analysis shows that working more hours doesn’t necessarily increase overall output, but neither does working a very short week. It's all about the productivity that one has while at work.
I believe that attaining maximum productivity is easy if people follow these simple steps.
1.Wake up earlier
There is a common saying “the early bird catches the worm”. Wake up at least one hour earlier. That extra sixty minutes allows time to mentally and physically prepare for the day ahead and put plans in place to maximize results.
2.Have a morning ritual
Evening rituals are a common habit for entrepreneurs. However, I believe that people need to adopt a morning ritual too. According to experts, people’s self-control is at it’s highest during the small hours of the morning. “Every morning, write out what you want to achieve that day and stick to it!”.
3.Take cold showers
Cold water has been proven to help blood rush to the areas of the brain that controls mood. The happy neurotransmitters- increase mental alertness and decreasing fatigue and stress.
4.Eat breakfast
Breakfast is commonly referred to as the most important meal of the day, and that’s because our bodies need refuelling.
5.Do your most challenging task first
New York Times best-selling author, Dan Ariely, explains that we have peak productivity about 2 hours after waking termed as the ‘magic hours’. You should capitalize on that window and tackle the most challenging task first.
6. Use the 2-minute rule
I believe that if a task only takes 2 minutes to complete, people should act on it straight away instead of doing it later. By tackling the small tasks right away, it leaves time for the more complex ones.
7. Budget your time
I argue that time-budgeting increases productivity. Having a time limit instils a sense of urgency and will prevent procrastination. Aspiring professionals should implement these hacks to boost their productivity and accelerate their success.
