How to Increase Employee Engagement and Retention

In this week's newsletter, I am sharing some tips on how you can increase employee engagement and staff retention.

Employee engagement is a hot topic for businesses as organisations are increasingly challenged to retain top talent and attract new talent into their teams.?

At a time when companies are struggling to hire new staff, increasing employee engagement and reducing staff turnover are essential to the future success of organisations.?

It’s time to move past trial and error, and quick fixes, and discover how you can engage and develop impactful leaders and teams, who are energised and connected to outstanding results.?

At the Manufacturing and Supply Chain conference in May at the RDS Dublin, I shared some research and insights on how leaders can improve employee engagement and increase staff retention.

?But first….. what is happening?

  • ?In a McKinsey study of more than 53K managers, 86% of Managers rated themselves as inspiring and good role models
  • While the Gallup engagement survey found that 82% of employees see their leaders as fundamentally uninspiring.
  • In fact, the same survey found that only 13% of the global workforce are engaged.?

Do you believe you are inspiring as a leader? Do you find your leader inspiring and a good role model??These are interesting questions to reflect on.???

So, what do employees need to feel engaged, which is currently lacking?

  • To be empowered – employees need to be positively challenged for growth in their role, and that does not mean just giving them more work!
  • Feel valued – employees need to feel their value is recognised at a manager and organisational level.?Monetary recognition is only one aspect, because if we don’t FEEL recognised, then we will not feel the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment we need to fuel our motivation and engagement.
  • Connection – employees need to feel connected to the purpose of the organisation and have a sense of trust and belonging.?
  • Opportunity - employees need opportunities for personal growth, development, and advancement in their roles.?

How can you make this happen?.... There are many ways to do this.?

One very impactful way to increase employee engagement is empowering employees in their own independent self-leadership and helping them to make an impactful contribution to the results of the organisation.?

To support this, I designed the Self-Leadership Triangle, which I have used with teams and leaders over the last few years.?It has helped leaders of teams to empower individuals to develop, grow and perform significantly better, as engagement levels increase.?

Self-leadership is about managing yourself first, and that is for you who lead teams but equally, for the people you need to perform at their best within a team, they must be able to manage themselves first.?
